Former Cowboys WR Dez Bryant dismissed Cam Newton's quarterback list because Super Bowl 59 MVP Jalen Hurts wasn't on it and Bryant believes Hurts is a top 5 QB.

It’s hard to believe that Eagles fans will ever agree on anything with Dez Bryant. But they had no other option but to side with the former Cowboys star because he echoed the same sentiment they have been screaming for years, i.e. Jalen Hurts is a top 5 quarterback.

Earlier this week, former NFL MVP Cam Newton recited his top 10 NFL quarterback list. Josh Allen topped the list, while Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes took the second and third spots. Jalen Hurts wasn’t on it.

Bryant disagreed with Newton. From his point of view, the 26-year-old has earned his top 5 status.

I think Jalen is one of the top 5 QBs in the National Football League. I believe the National Football League is looking for the Jalen Hurts type.

Hurts was named the Super Bowl LIX MVP after orchestrating a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. However, to many, running back Saquon Barkley‘s 2000+ yard season was primarily the reason behind the Eagles’ success.

Bryant countered that argument.

Jalen has mastered how to operate the talent around him. Saquon Barkley became the best running back in the league because of Jalen Hurts’ dual-threat ability.

Bryant added

Barkley played six seasons for the New York Giants, but the best he could ever manage was 1312 yards (4.4 yards per carry) in 2022. With Hurts under center in Philly, Barkley led the league in scrimmage yards (2283) and 5.8 yards per carry (his best ever numbers).

Hurts deserves a lot of credit for what he does for the Eagles. He’s not flashy like Allen, doesn’t have great speed like Lamar, or as great a pass as Joe Burrow, but he gets the job done.

However, it’s foolish to write Hurts off. Pro Football Reference revealed Hurts ranked in the top 10 in air yards per attempt and on-target rate in 2024, and he was the league’s highest-rated qualified passer in the fourth quarter of one-score games. So, it basically means he maintained a calm demeanor under pressure.

In the end, when it’s all said and done, coaches prefer quarterbacks who can execute every call to perfection. 4000 passing yards and 30+ touchdowns look great on the stat sheet, but the number of wins in the win column matters the most.

Jalen Hurts sees his Super Bowl ring for the first time

While Bryant and the rest of social media argued over Hurts’ credentials as a top quarterback, the former second-round pick was collecting his Super Bowl winner’s ring. Hurts, Barkley, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, and even departed CB CJ Gardner-Johnson were handed their customized rings on Saturday.

The ring is a well-crafted piece of jewelry. It contains 40 diamonds in the words “WORLD CHAMPIONS” for the 40 points the Eagles scored at Super Bowl 59, with 145 engraved inside (most points scored in a single season), and 5 diamonds on the top of the ring (for the five different Eagles players who scored in the final).

Additionally, the ring maker placed 10 diamonds on the logo to symbolize the 10-game winning streak to close out the season—18 green stones (for the 18 total wins) and the insignia of the two Lombardi Trophies the Eagles have won under owner Jeffery Lurie’s tenure.

Two miniature wings (signifying the Eagles’ wings) pop up at one end of the ring by pressing a button.

The craftsman also placed the Brazilian flag at the base in remembrance of the Eagles’ week one win against the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo last season.

The training camps are around the corner. By Tuesday, every team, including the Eagles, would have kicked off this year’s camp. The Eagles take on Bryant’s former team, the Dallas Cowboys, in the first game of the 2025-26 season.
