Mike McCarthy, the Dallas Cowboys head coach, declared that he isn’t returning to Texas for another season. The Packers Super Bowl winning coach had a dismal 2024 season as the Cowboys missed playoffs for the second season under his charge. Former Cowboys star Dez Bryant is a happier man because of it.
The Dallas Cowboys in 2024 was the system example of everything goes wrong. They started on the wrong foot with multiple contract dramas and pre-season hold-ins followed by blowout losses in the first three weeks itself. They even had a streak of home losses and the star quarterback getting injured – the team’s poor form and Micah Parsons’ comments set off rumors that McCarthy doesn’t have the support or the ear of the locker room.
The Cowboys tried to stage a comeback in the latter half of the league with backup Cooper Rush. However, they were far too gone to make the playoffs.
Dez Bryant admitted that the Cowboys looking for a fresh start is a great move. Via his X profile, he tweeted that it’s a “Great move for the Dallas Cowboys!”
Great move for the Dallas Cowboys!

Bryant, a Dallas Cowboys legend, continued his criticism of Mike McCarthy by voicing concerns about the team potentially selecting Boise State’s star running back, Ashton Jeanty, in the upcoming draft. Bryant openly expressed that he doesn’t believe McCarthy is the right man to coach Ashton Jeanty.
If Dallas is thinking about drafting Ashton Jeanty..Mike McCarthy damn sure is not the coach to coach him…

The Cowboys will select 12th in the upcoming draft and has around overall ten picks in 2025. The opinions about whether the Cowboys should select Jeanty or look ahead with some sleeper picks is split.
What’s next for Mike McCarthy after Cowboys exit?
As it stands, there are five teams with coaching vacancies excluding the Cowboys after Mike Vrabel picked the New England Patriots. Amongst the five, Mike McCarthy is least expected to join the New York Jets given his messy relation with Aaron Rodgers.
The Chicago Bears is one of the best fits that McCarthy has as of now. The Bears started off strong and collapsed after a Week 8 loss to Washington Commanders – setting a streak of losses.
Despite the harsh season, they still possess strong offensive and defensive players, including the rookie Caleb Williams. Williams has struggled as a rookie and Mike McCarthy is known for developing quarterbacks into prime as he did with Dak Prescott.
The New Orleans Saints remain a potential option, but the lack of a proper franchise quarterback and lack of potential options in the upcoming draft might turn him away from choosing the Saints. Mike McCarthy started his career as an OC with the Saints in 2000 and lead them to being ranked a third in scoring offense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are farther options considering the Jaguars’ coaching personel trajectory under the new owner. In terms of Las Vegas Raiders, they are considering options like Bill Belichick to leave his new position and join them – so McCarthy won’t possibly be the option they are chasing.
