Dianna Russini, just like other journalists have to abide by rules dictating how close they can get to players, coaches, and executives.

In Short
  • Dianna Russini has been suspended by the New York Times amid an investigation into her interactions with NFL coach Mike Vrabel.
  • The investigation was prompted by photographs and social media posts suggesting a potential inappropriate relationship between the two.
  • Both Russini and Vrabel have denied the allegations, claiming they were with a larger group of friends during the incidents.

The New England Patriots have not said anything about Mike Vrabel so far after he was captured on camera having a moment or two with New York Times reporter Dianna Russini.

The two were first spotted holding hands, hugging, and spending time at a hotel pool in Sedona, Arizona, a day after the head coach was at the Arizona State Sun Devils’ Pro Day.

It was initially reported that it was just the two of them, which led many to speculate that they were probably having a relationship despite being married to their respective spouses.

Social media pages unearthed clips of Russini jokingly taking shots at her husband, and that helped to fuel the ‘secret relationship’ narrative. The two did provide statements clarifying that they were there along with six other people, who were possibly conveniently not depicted in the photos.

Another photograph came to the fore, which showed the NFL insider having a round of drinks with Vrabel at a bar in Indianapolis after this year’s NFL combine.

After all these instances came to light, the New York Times has now suspended Dianna Russini from working on NFL reporting. The New York Post reported that after their subsidiary Page Six reached out for a statement from the mother of two, the Times sidelined her and began its investigation.

She will not be able to work until they clear her of having an inappropriate relationship with Mike Vrabel. This means her work before and up until the NFL Draft could be compromised.

The Athletic and the New York Times had initially dismissed the accusations against Dianna Russini

When the photos from Arizona first came out, Page Six had contacted the Athletic executive editor, Steven Ginsberg, for a comment.

At the time, he dismissed the speculation surrounding Dianna Russini, pointing out that the pictures ‘lacked context’ as a larger group of friends was present at the location. Now that stance has changed.

New details from the Page Six report and information from the investigation raised additional concerns that are now being reviewed further. The investigation is ongoing.

The New York Post revealed

This means that likely, the second photograph of their senior NFL Insider and Mike Vrabel at the bar, along with her comments about her husband, was enough for them to dig deep into the situation.

In between all this, the Patriots have not said a word, and Vrabel has been quiet about it. Until and unless he appears in public, it is unlikely that either he or the franchise he works for will say anything.

The proof is stacking up against Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel

Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel have dismissed these accusations as ‘baseless,’ pointing to the fact that there were other friends along with them. However, the photographs presented by Page Six represent a different story.

Three other eyewitnesses told us they did not see anyone else with the pair. Asked if the Pats coach visited the hotel with a group of friends, one eyewitness said: ‘No, he was with a girl.’ And our sequence of photographs taken at various points during the day show only Vrabel and Russini.

The New York Post revealed

The publication mentioned that sources close to the reporter and the three-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker confirmed that there were friends present. However, as the words of neutral eyewitnesses generally hold greater weight over sources close to the parties facing these accusations, this explains why The New York Times initiated an investigation.

More than loss of face and potential job losses, the families of Vrabel and Russini, respectively, will be the ones facing most of the brunt.
