The last few days in the boxing community have been fast-paced and filled with significant developments. The major topic of discussion is potential opponents of the Mexican boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez’s next fight. Jake Paul and undefeated American boxer Terence Crawford were among the contenders. However, one of these boxers appears to be noticeably upset following the changes.
The chairman of Saudi GEA, Turki Alalshikh, recently announced the signing of Canelo Alvarez to a four-fight deal. With that, Alalshikh dismissed any possibility of a potential fight between the Mexican superstar and Paul. Following this announcement, Paul expressed his displeasure, feeling let down by Canelo. As a result, he released a dedicated video on X, seemingly lashing out at Alvarez.
Oh Canelo, you pu*a (Mexican cuss word). Time to expose him. So we had a signed contract to fight. Here you can see Canelo’s signature and my signature to the right. Claiming he’s not fighting YouTubers, bullsh*t. Look at the poster. We were announcing Tuesday, February 11th. Claiming he fights real fighters, but he’s fighting Crawford, a 135-pound fighter, and running from a real fighter like David Benavidez you b*tch. The truth is you can be bought. You’re a money-hungry squirrel chasing your next nut…

In the video, Paul appeared to inadvertently reveal their fight agreement, which clearly marked the details as confidential. Combat sports lawyer Erik Magraken quickly noticed this and brought it to the attention of netizens through his social media account. In his rant, Paul called Canelo a “money-hungry squirrel,” suggesting that he could easily be bought. As a result, he also questioned Alvarez’s loyalty.

Seems like the ‘signed contract to fight’ that Jake Paul posted is actually a confidentiality agreement. pic.twitter.com/TIDSXuh76F

In the wake of Canelo’s deal with Alalshikh, several prominent figures shared their reactions. Eddie Hearn, the CEO of Matchroom Boxing, expressed a similar view regarding Alvarez’s tendency to gravitate towards opportunities with greater financial incentives. However, the Mexican boxing superstar ultimately decided against a potential fight with Paul and remain focused on matchups for the Riyadh Season.
Turki Alalshikh details his conversation with Canelo Alvarez while negotiating their deal
Saudi delegate Turki Alalshikh is arguably one of the key figures advocating for a matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. However, he has also developed a strong dislike for social media influencers transitioning into boxing. Jake Paul, in particular, faces intense scrutiny within the boxing community due to his reputation for fighting retired legends and faded boxers.

Since joining the boxing community, Alalshikh has worked tirelessly to enhance the reputation of the sport. He believes that high-profile matchups, such as Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, could be key to achieving this goal. Additionally, Alalshikh recognizes Canelo’s immense popularity within the boxing world and wants him to fight against top-tier opponents rather than YouTuber-turned-boxers like Paul.
I call Canelo directly and I said to him, ‘Hello brother, you know this fight (against Jake Paul) will damage the pictures and the idea about our plan and honestly, I think, you are as a Canelo, too young to take this fight (against Jake Paul), you can have it after thirty years, when he (Canelo) is sixty.’ Then he said to me, ‘Brother, you know from my inside, I don’t want this fight ever but I said to you take the May fight, I don’t have something in the table and I must fight before Crawford.’

Currently, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding Canelo’s opponents for his four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. However, one of the fights is clearly confirmed: the Mexican boxing star is scheduled to face Crawford in September 2025. This will be Alvarez’s second fight under the deal. Prior to that, he is set to have another bout in May 2025.
