Diego Lopes has quickly risen through the UFC ranks, becoming one of the featherweight division’s most popular contenders. The Brazilian is a fan favorite due to his humble personality, respectful attitude, and exciting style. Despite his recent 145lbs title-fight setbacks, Lopes remains a major attraction and is set to compete at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.
However, he recently admitted those losses have reduced his leverage. Lopes earned his first title shot against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 314 after a five-fight win streak and a run of active performances in 2023-2024.
However, the bout ended in a unanimous decision loss for the Brazilian contender. He later received a rematch with Volkanovski at UFC 325 in February 2026, with just a single victory over Jean Silva, but once again came up short, suffering another unanimous decision defeat to the Australian superstar.
Despite those setbacks, Lopes remains near the top of the featherweight division and currently holds the No. 2 ranking at 145 pounds. He is now scheduled to face No. 9-ranked Steve Garcia at the historic UFC Freedom 250 event. Lopes recently discussed how the matchup came together and revealed he had very little say in the booking. Instead, he accepted the fight when the UFC presented the opportunity.
The UFC called me two days before announcing the card and asked about a fight with Steve Garcia. They never said anything about fighting at the White House. I just said, ‘Yeah, don’t worry. The people know me. I accept any fight.’ “Two days later, during the Max Holloway vs. Charles Oliveira card, they started showing the fights, and I saw my name. I said, ‘Okay, cool, one more fight.’ I just lost my second chance at the title, so I don’t have a lot of choices. I like to say yes to every fight the UFC offers me.

Lopes felt confident in his UFC standing when he received a rematch against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 325. He believed his star power, marketability, and UFC CEO Dana White’s support helped him earn another title opportunity. Despite losing their first meeting, Lopes stayed in contention after an impressive win over Silva in September 2025, which strengthened his case for a second title shot.
Lopes’ rise through the ranks was fueled by wins over proven contenders such as Dan Ige and Brian Ortega. Those victories helped him secure two title opportunities and establish himself among the division’s elite. However, while Lopes has found success against several household names, he has yet to solve the puzzle presented by ‘Volk’, dropping both of their championship encounters on the scorecards.
Steve Garcia enters UFC Freedom 250 on a seven-fight winning streak, making him a significant test for Lopes. A win over the American would help the Brazilian rebuild momentum after consecutive title-fight losses. While another championship opportunity remains distant, Lopes could eventually pursue a grudge match with Yair Rodriguez. For now, UFC Freedom 250 represents a crucial step in his comeback trail.
Diego Lopes reveals how he will deal with the challenges of fighting at the White House South Lawn
Diego Lopes’ journey to UFC stardom is one of the sport’s most remarkable success stories. Born in Manaus, Brazil, Lopes began training jiu-jitsu at a young age and transitioned to mixed martial arts as a teenager. Seeking better opportunities, he moved to Mexico in 2015 and built much of his professional career there. His willingness to chase his dream across borders helped lay the foundation for his UFC rise.

The outdoor setting for UFC Freedom 250 has created concerns about several unpredictable factors, including gnats, insects, and changing weather conditions. Unlike a traditional arena event, fighters could be forced to deal with environmental distractions throughout fight week and on event night. However, Lopes appears unfazed by those challenges, having previously competed outdoors early in his career.
One time in Brazil, back in 2014, I fought at the bottom of a bridge. Another time, I was supposed to fight in Mexico in 2016, but it didn’t happen because it started raining just as my fight was about to begin.

Dana White has stressed that the promotion is working extensively to address the challenges surrounding UFC Freedom 250. White has maintained that there is little reason for concern regarding the technical issues, given the measures being taken. As preparations continue, Lopes remains focused on his fight rather than the conditions. The Brazilian is determined to make the most of the historic opportunity.
