Argentinian player Diego Schwartzman was in tears after losing to Gael Monfils at the 2024 US Open. The 32-year-old had played his last match at the event and was overwhelmed by the love he received from the crowd, not just on Monday (August 26) but throughout his career.
Schwartzman thanked the spectators present in the arena for the love they had given him over the years. He was overcome with emotion and poured his heart out for the fans, while also doubting if he deserved all the love he received over the years.
Special moments like you saw on the screen (video montage). Once again playing here.. eleven times. I did great. But I think the entire crowd today, the years before, all the Latin American people.. all the American people here.. I don’t know why they take care of me so good every year. I’m not sure if I deserve it or not. But I’m really grateful about all the years I’ve been here.Diego Schwartzman said in his on-court interview
Schwartzman made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open twice in his career. Although the Argentine never came close to winning a title, his fighting spirit had always been admired by the fans. He showed it one last time when he fought for every point against Monfils.
Diego Schwartzman promises to enjoy every moment
After thanking the crowd for their love, Diego Schwartzman promised that he would enjoy every moment till the end of the season. The 32-year-old said that while he had been running away from these emotional moments until now, he will cherish every one of them going forward.
I want to say thank you one more time to all the people here and who are watching on tv.. I never dreamed of these kind of moments. I ran so much and maybe I deserve it now. I’m happy to have these moments. Congrats Gael one more time and to your team. I will enjoy every single moment from now on. I want to say thank you.Diego Schwartzman said
In May, Schwartzman had announced his plan to retire in Argentina next February. He will end a memorable career in which he won 250 tour-level matches, competed in the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020, and reached World No. 8 in the ATP rankings.
At the US Open, the Argentine played 26 matches, winning 16 of them. He made it to the quarterfinals in 2017 and 2019. This year, Schwartzman came into the main draw through the qualifying rounds but unfortunately could not make the most of it.
