Diego Simeone hails ‘desire and energy’ of Luis Suarez as he scores in Atletico’s win over Valencia
Atletico Madrid won 3-1 against Valencia to maintain a 7 point lead over rivals in La Liga. Luis Suarez scored a brilliant team goal which marked his 11th goal in the league.
Since his arrival in September, Suarez has become LaLiga’s joint-second highest scorer – tied with Lionel Messi on 11 goals. Valencia took the lead in the 11th minute as goals from Felix, Suarez and Correa helped Atletico come from behind to win the match.
Atletico Madrid on a 7 match winning streak in La Liga
Simeone’s call to Suarez had an influential role in bringing the 33-year-old striker to Atletico. Simeone said Suarez had showed him ‘desire and energy’ and admitted he had not disappointed in delivering on those qualities in the team.
Speaking of his phone call with Suarez, Simeone said: “The moment I spoke with Luis on the phone I found what he gives on the pitch: a lot of desire and energy.
“The team helps him to be at his best, which is scoring, something that has marked him throughout his career.”
Simeone was measured in his approach to the media even though Atletico are favourites to win the league. Atletico are 7 points clear at the top of table with a match in hand over both Barcelona and Real.
“We only think of Cádiz in our next game and to improve in each training session. We look at what is coming up, how we can improve.”
“In the first half our performance cost us, but then we played well in the second half and began to hurt Valencia. The best way to live with this moment is to take it game by game.”
Diego Simeone will look upto Suarez scoring more goals for Atletico as he aims for a first La Liga title since 2013-14.
