Dillon Danis teases former champion’s potential return at UFC 257

“The Notorious One” Conor McGregor is returning to the octagon. The Irishman will be taking on Dustin Poirier in a blockbuster rematch to their UFC 178 fight; which McGregor won by a 1st round KO. The match will supposedly headline UFC 257 on January 23rd. The fight was all but confirmed uptill now, but it looks like it has finally been made official.
McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis has teased his potential return at UFC 257 and the confirmation of his fight with Dustin Poirier. UFC president Dana White has also confirmed the fight.
Winner could potentially become the next lightweight champion
Taking to Twitter, Danis posted a picture with McGregor captioned “return of the Mac” referring to lyrics of the song ‘Can’t hold Us’ by popular rapper Macklemore; seemingly confirming the fight. Both McGregor and Poirier had in principle accepted the fight but both, in different posts on social media, had affirmed that the official contract was yet to be signed leaving the fight in limbo. The rematch between McGregor and Poirier has been in the works since September, with McGregor pushing for a match inside a stadium with live audiences. However, Dana White refused to give in to these demands, in light of contract issues between the UFC and McGregor.
The match, however, has been made official with the profits going to charity; as requested by McGregor. It will reportedly be contested at lightweight, instead of the “welterweight” that McGregor’s team had initially pushed for. This could possibly be a move to crown the winner as the new lightweight champion. The belt is reportedly vacant as now , ever since champion Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the world when he announced his retirement after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.
Needless to say, the MMA community will watching the developments with great interest.
