The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback room is undoubtedly one of the packed in the league, with six quarterbacks. There’s only one top spot, and the probability of becoming a starter relies on the QB1 showcasing poor performances or injuries.

As one can imagine, the pressure is pretty high, and a few tussles here and there are expected. The fans and critics are looking for any such incident that may raise a red flag, and one such quote from Dillon Gabriel was right in the lane they were looking for.

After his preseason debut against the Philadelphia Eagles, Dillon Gabriel gave quite a controversial interview to Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports on the sidelines. He admitted that there are entertainers and competitors in the NFL, and his job is to compete and be a good teammate.

There are entertainers and there are competitors, and I totally understand that. My job is to compete, and that’s what I’m doing… It’s something that I’ll get used to, and I just want to be the best teammate that I can, and create an environment where we can all get our best work in.

Dillon Gabriel said

The statement was thought by many critics, fans, and analysts to be a direct hit at his fellow teammate, Shedeur Sanders. As the son of a former NFL legend, who has a large media presence, Sanders has always been viewed through tinted lenses. Certain actions of the younger Sanders have also been deemed questionable. And Gabriel’s words walked right into it.

In light of strong social media scrutiny, Gabriel has come out to clarify the truth about his statement. Gabriel claimed that he didn’t aim the comment at Sanders, nor did he have any malicious intent against him.

Yeah, first off, I’m all about our team and each other. I would never make that [comment about Sanders] and I’ve said it before that’s why it’s interesting, but for me I’ve explained it entertainers are you all, competitor, that’s what I am, and all my teammates and we both have jobs to do, so that’s it.

Browns’ QB decision looms as Shedeur Sanders works back from injury

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said that the team is close to finalizing its starting quarterback for the upcoming season. With the Browns set to host the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason finale on Saturday, Stefanski described the game as a “dress rehearsal.” The Browns are set to feature most of the starters in action for this game.

I need to get the football team in here, talk to the players, those types of things. We’re working towards, obviously, Week 1, that’s part of what this week is about, getting our football team ready. So, we’ll make all those type of determinations in the next couple of days.

Kevin Stefanski explained

The quarterback competition in Cleveland has been impacted by injuries. Kenny Pickett, who strained his hamstring during training camp on July 26, has yet to take part in full 11-on-11 drills. Fellow quarterback Sanders has also dealt with limitations in recent weeks.

Stefanski noted he is “hopeful” both will ramp up their activity in practice but stressed that progress will be evaluated “day by day.” The Browns plan to use the coming week to assess their options, with clarity expected before the opener against division rivals, Cincinnati Bengals, in early September.
