“He doesn’t know anything about basketball!” Dirk Nowitzki hilariously trolls billionaire friend Mark Cuban for Luka Doncic comparison
Dirk Nowitzki responded to Mark Cuban's recent comment on Luka Doncic being better than him.
L-R: Dirk Nowitzki, Mark Cuban and Luka Doncic
Dallas Mavericks legend and basketball Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki gave a hilarious response to the Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, who had earlier chosen Luka Doncic over him. He made this known while on a recent episode of ‘Unplugged with Kevin Hart‘.
He playfully responded to Mark Cuban by poking fun at his basketball knowledge, jokingly suggesting that Cuban didn’t know much about the game. However, he quickly clarified that it was all in good fun and went on to praise the former majority owner.
Well, the good thing is here that Mark doesn't know anything about basketball, so he doesn't know what he is watching. Oh, kidding, Mark's my guy. Yeah, honestly, I mean, I gotta say he's spot on, you know.Dirk Nowitzki said
The genesis of the conversation was when Cuban shared his thoughts on who the GOAT of the Dallas Mavericks franchise is on ‘The Draymond Green Show’, which then led to the clap-back from Nowitzki. However, he also acknowledged Doncic’s talents, his scoring prowess, rebound contribution as well as his playmaking.
Furthermore, he compared his style of play to that of the Slovenian as he was primarily a scorer, whereas Doncic is an all-round player, which uniquely sets him apart. However, Nowitzki’s 21-year career with the franchise led to the team’s first and only NBA championship in 2011. But now the torch has been passed to Doncic, whose impressive performance this season has made him an MVP contender.
Dirk Nowitzki once had his doubts about Luka Doncic
While he is all praise of the new ‘face’ of the franchise now, Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t always sold out about Luka Doncic, as he first encountered the then-rookie during his final year with the Mavericks. He shared this during a session of the “All The Smoke” podcast alongside former players Matt Barnes and Steven Jackson last year.
We needed a little spark plug to change things. I didn't think it was going to be this kid. I'm like, I'm not sure this is going to work ... And so, there were plenty of doubts there from everybody on the team.Dirk Nowitzki said
However, it didn’t take long, as the young Doncic wasted no time in winning over the veteran NBA champion. And he confessed to being a believer as he was amazed by the growth of Doncic.
Doncic, in his time with the Mavericks, has seen him average 28.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, and 8.3 APG. This season, he has led the franchise to the playoffs with an impressive record of 50-30.
