French winger, Michael Olise was devastated beyond comprehension after a close defeat in the Olympics gold medal match. This led him to take off his silver medal while in the queue. Despite a rollicking fightback from France, a late brace from Sergio Camello saw Spain clinch their first gold medal in football since the 1992 Barcelona games.

France produced a captivating run while Michael Olise was at the heart of their dominion. Standing in line with the other players while getting their medals, Olise was visibly distraught. Eventually, he took off his silver medal, being the only one in the French unit to do so.

Riding high on strikes from Alexandre Lacazette, Olise, and Loic Bade, the French outplayed USA comprehensively in their opening fixture. They then shifted their focus to Guinea and had a slender victory despite a comprehensive performance. It was against the USA that France brought out their very best, thumping them 3-0.

In what was a nail-biting encounter in the quarter-final, it was Jean-Philippe Mateta who scored the solitary goal against Argentina to book a semi-final berth for the French. France came back from behind to equalize in the regulation time against Egypt in the semis. Olise smashed the winner in the 108th minute to clinch a berth in the grand finale where they were thumped by Spain despite another extraordinary turnaround.

In the summit clash between Spain and France, it was Enzo Millot who opened the scoring for France, echoing their dominion throughout the tournament. However, Spain was quick to retaliate through a brace from Fermin Lopez who struck in the 18th and the 25th minute. Alex Baena hammered home in the 28th minute to propel La Roja to a 3-1 lead.

However, a sensational turnaround from France saw Maghnes Akliouche reducing the deficit while a controversial penalty in the dying embers of the game saw Jean-Philippe Mateta score home the all-important equalizer from the dreaded spot forcing an extra-time. Despite all the fury from the French squad, Sergio Camello kept his composure to score a double in the extra time as Spain shattered their jinx of 32 years to finally clinch Olympic gold once again in men’s football.
