After the departure of Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron, head coach Matt Eberflus appears to be on the hot seat, following the disastrous loss against the Detroit Lions. He is facing increased scrutiny, not only from the league but also from his own players.

Late in the Thursday Football game, the Bears had the chance to turn it to their favor, if only they had utilized a time-out in field goal range. However, head coach Eberflus turned it down and his team could not even attempt the field goal, which may have tied the score against the Lions and had to settle for an incomplete pass before losing at 23-20.

In the post-game press conference, while quarterback Caleb Williams held himself responsible for the loss, his teammate DJ Moore decided to share his honest perspective. While addressing the media in the locker room, the wide receiver put the blame for the loss on Eberflus.

Uh, I don’t think we huddled. We just got right back on the ball and ran a play. Like I said, I don’t know why we didn’t call a timeout, but we were on the ball so fast it didn’t really matter.

DJ Moore told the reporters

Despite all the pieces around to have a winning season, the Bears are stuck at 4-8 with their playoff hopes slipping away. The Week 13 game marked their sixth consecutive loss and all their remaining games are against teams with winning records.

Matt Eberflus defends clock management after loss to Lions

The Bears did not use their final timeout and rushed straight for the play, which ended up being an incomplete downfield hit by Williams as the clock ran out on them. This put head coach Eberflus in the spotlight, scrutinizing his clock management skills. In the post-game press conference, he defended his decision to turn down the timeout.

We were outside the field goal range, so we needed to get a few more yards in there, as close as we can get, and then we were going to call a timeout, and that’s why we held that last timeout. To me, I think we handled it the right way. I do believe you re-rack the play, get it in-bounds, and then call timeout. That’s why we held it and it didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.

This game would have marked a comeback for the Bears– the last ray of hope to believe they can conclude the season with a winning record and possibly advance to the postseason. However, it appears the turning point of Eberflus’ future in the Windy City.
