Last season was the first year of new head coach Mike MacDonald‘s new era with the Seattle Seahawks. After finishing 10-7 with the likes of Geno Smith, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett on the team, they started making moves that would bring major changes to their future.

It started with quarterback Geno Smith moving to the Las Vegas Raiders. That trade was an indication that the team want to instill a new identity. To instill that identity, a few of the old pieces had to be removed and Smith was just the start.

They released Tyler Lockett, one of the best players in Seattle Seahawks’ history, even though he is not one of those high maintenance receivers. On the other hand, one high maintenance receiver is his former teammate, DK Metcalf.

Now Metcalf was looking for a contract extension that would befit his 900+ yard production every season. The Seahawks, though, decided not to cave in and the wideout handed in a trade request. The team initially had high demands in terms of assets they could take to send Metcalf away.

The Seahawks are trading WR DK Metcalf to the Steelers for premium draft pick compensation. It’s a 2025 2nd rounder to Seattle for DK Metcalf. Mammoth.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, a team that was forever known for being good at trades, gave away a 2nd round pick. But DK Metcalf is still only 27 years old and if he continues to stay healthy, will be a major weapon for at least the next four seasons.

Steelers hand DK Metcalf massive contract extension

Aside from being careful in trades, the Pittsburgh Steelers also have another reputation. That is, they are stingy when it comes to overpaying players. But knowing what DK Metcalf is bringing to their table, they informed league Insiders of their next move.

DK Metcalf had one year and $18 million left on his old deal. Now he gets a 4-year, $132 million extension — $33 million per year — that puts him under contract through 2029 and makes him one of the NFL’s highest-paid receivers.

This makes his effective contract five years long. But considering what he was already due next season, he will earn $33 million. That money places him third on the highest-paid wide receivers list. More importantly, that money and length of the contract will keep him happy.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had issues with current star wideout George Pickens in the past. It is not known if this trade for Metcalf is to pave a way to get rid of Pickens. If not, Steel City will have an electric duo to start next season.
