DK Metcalf let frustration get the better of him during the week 8 fixture against the Green Bay Packers. In the heat of the moment, he poked a Packers player in the eye.

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a nine point lead before heading into the halftime break. Metcalf scored his one and only touchdown thirty seconds before the stoppage in play.

After the restart, the Packers not only reduced the lead but also established one themselves. The pressure mounted on the Steelers to preserve its fifty year home record over the NFC North foes.

Metcalf became cranky as time ticked off. Moments after Packers tight end Tucker Kraft scored his second touchdown, extending his team’s lead to nine points, Metcalf finally showed signs of frustration.

Aaron Rodgers hit running back Jaylen Warren on back to back plays to keep the drive going for the Steelers only for Metcalf to pick up 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. Instant replay showed that the 27-year-old wide receiver appeared to poke Green Bay linebacker Quay Walker in the eye and visibly yank on his facemask.

The Steelers fans had grown accustomed to such behavior by watching George Pickens. Now the mantle has passed on to Metcalf.

His shenanigans killed the momentum of the drive as the Steelers punted the ball back to the Packers, who extended the lead, and in the ensuing drive, Kenneth Gainwell‘s fumble turned the ball over once again which resulted in additional three points for the Green Bay franchise.

Aaron Rodgers screams at DK Metcalf after costly drop

The seed of Metcalf’s agony was sown long before his roughing the passer call. In fact, it was as far back as in the second quarter.

Rodgers orchestrated four scoring drives in the first half. However, three of those drives ended with Chris Boswell kicking field goals for the Steelers. On one of those drives, the Steelers had to kick after Metcalf dropped a passes right near the Packers’ goal line.

While Boswell prepared his kick, NBC showed a replay of the drop followed by a replay of Rodgers’ reaction. The 41-year-old can be seen spewing out a few NSFW words at his receiver.

Two plays later, Metcalf scored a touchdown. His night finished with 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 score. After seven games, Metcalf has accumulated 27 catches on 43 targets for 461 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The Steelers acquired Metcalf in a trade deal in the offseason, which included a second-round pick (No. 52 overall) in the 2025 NFL draft along with a pick swap in the sixth and seventh rounds. According to reports, Metcalf signed a five-year, $150 million extension ($35 million AAV).

Metcalf entered the league with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. Since then he has played 104 games, catching 465 passes for 6785 yards, and 53 touchdowns. 2020 remains his best year to date. That season he caught 83 passes for 1303 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.

The Steelers are now 4-3 after losing the last two games, including the defeat against the Bengals last week. Next week, they host the 7-1 Indianapolis Colts at Acrisure Stadium.
