Shohei Ohtani once again stole the spotlight on Wednesday as he hit another home run and picked up some strikeouts. Despite his top performance, the Los Angeles Dodgers ended up losing 5-3 against the St. Louis Cardinals, which ignited some wild reactions on social media.
The Dodgers have suffered a skid in form in the past few weeks. They had won 3 and lost 3 of their last 6 games before heading into action on Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Ohtani would take to the mound in this game. The Japanese international, who has returned to pitching this year, threw out 4 strong innings and managed to pick up 8 strikeouts. The 8 strikeouts from him was his season high.

On the other side of the field, Ohtani clobbered a 2-run home run in the 3rd inning. His two-run shot not only gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead, but it also turned out to be his 1,000th hit in the MLB.

When Ohtani left the mound, the Dodgers were leading the game. After being 3-1 up through 5 innings, the bullpen of the Dodgers gave up runs in the 6th, 8th and 9th innings.
The Cardinals eventually came back from 3-1 down and took the game 5-3. Relief pitcher Alex Vesia was charged with the loss for the Dodgers as Ohtani’s incredible performance went in vain.

Social media reacts as Shohei Ohtani’s historic performance goes in vain
On Wednesday, Shohei Ohtani once again reminded everyone of his 2-way prowess. The reigning National League MVP slugged his 39th home run of the season and picked up 8 strikeouts through 4 innings. However, his team still ended up losing.

Fans on social media were quick to throw in jokes while taking a swipe at the Dodgers. Several users recalled the “Tungsten Arm’ O’Doyle” joke regarding Ohtani during his time with the Los Angeles Angels. One user on X wrote, “Welcome back Tungsten Arm” while reacting to this loss.

For the unversed, the “Tungsten Arm’ O’Doyle” was a joke that was used by several MLB fans when Ohtani and his former teammate Mike Trout would do something incredible but still end up on the losing side. In this case, Ohtani once again had a top showing but ended the day with another loss.
Shohei Ohtani and Los Angeles Dodgers lose crucial series against St. Louis Cardinals
After a hot start to the season, Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers have suffered a slump in form. On Wednesday, the defending World Series champions lost 5-3 against the St. Louis Cardinals and dropped a crucial series against them.

The Dodgers, who were 56-32 after sweeping the Chicago White Sox at the start of July, have seen them been swept aside by the Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers (twice by the latter). Their form since the All-Star break has been shaky, with their biggest winning streak being of 2 games.
The loss on Wednesday left them with a 66-49 record. Their lead at the top of the NL West Standings has been cut down to 2 games as the San Diego Padres are 64-51.
This is the smallest lead the LA-based side has had since June 15th. The two teams are also scheduled to face each other in a 3-game series next weekend.
Before that, the Dodgers will turn their attention towards the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the American League East with a 68-48 record. After this 3-game series against fellow division leaders, the Dodgers will take on their rivals, the Los Angeles Angels.
