The Los Angeles Dodgers have splashed the cash once again. On Tuesday, the 9-time World Series winners signed 3-time All-Star Edwin Diaz on a 3-year, $69 million deal. This development left the fans on social media fuming.

Diaz had another dominating campaign while coming out of the bullpen for the New York Mets. After recording 5 saves through 11.1 innings, he was named the National League Reliever of the Month in May.

The Mets suffered a major collapse in the second half of the season. Despite strong performances from Diaz, the team kept on losing. They eventually ended the campaign with an 83-79 record and missed the playoffs on the final day of the season.

The right-handed pitcher finished the year with a 6-3 record. In the 62 games he played, he pitched with a low 1.63 ERA and managed to pick up 98 strikeouts and 28 saves.

Diaz had signed a 5-year, $102 million contract extension with the Mets in November 2022. The 31-year-old had two years and $38 million guaranteed on his contract. He, however, decided to opt-out of this deal and test free agency.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, did have some trouble in the bullpen this year. Tanner Scott, who was signed on a 4-year $72 million deal last offseason, struggled heavily while coming out of the bullpen and blew several saves.

With Diaz available on the market, the two-time defending champions once again flexed their financial muscles and roped him in. As per reports from MLB.com, the NL West side will lose its second and fifth-highest selections in the 2026 Draft as subject to Competitive Balance Tax.

Diaz has established himself as one of the best closers in MLB in recent years. On top of 3 All-Star appearances, he has won 3 National League Reliever of the Year Award. He will enter the 2026 season with 253 saves, the fourth most by an active pitcher in the league.

Hernandez has been highly active on social media and vocal about his team. After the Dodgers went back-to-back as champions, he silenced several critics and took a swipe at those who badmouthed the team.

On Tuesday, he expressed his excitement regarding the signing of Diaz with a 5-word message. Taking to his Instagram stories, he shared the post of MLB announcing Diaz’s signing and wrote, “F AROUND AND FIND OUT!!!

Hernandez himself is a free agent and is still waiting for an offer from teams. However, he has remained loyal to the Dodgers.

A few days ago, the team re-signed Miguel Rojas and brought him back for another year. The veteran had a huge impact in Game 7 of the World Series and hit a clutch game-tying home run in the top of the 9th inning with one out.

With him back on the team, the LA-based side could go out and bring back Hernandez as well. For now, the utility player will have to wait.
