This past week, the MLB hosted its first-ever Rivalry Week. During this, the two Los Angeles teams, the Dodgers and the Angels, faced off against each other. In this, the LA Angels went on to sweep their rivals for the first time in over 15 years.
The two teams have been in contrasting forms in the past few years. While the Dodgers have achieved plenty of success, the Angels have failed to reach the playoffs and have struggled in the American League West standings.
Coming into this series, the Angels were bottom of the AL West. Meanwhile, the Dodgers were top of the National League West division. Many expected the Dodgers to once again get the better of their rivals given the form they were in.
After hammering the Athletics 19-2, the Dodgers lost the first game by a 6-2 score. On Saturday, the Angels edged out their rivals, 11-9 and won the series. Going into the game on Sunday, they were hoping to do something that they had not done since 2010.
After taking a 4-0 lead on Sunday, the Angels did find themselves level on terms as the Dodgers made it 4-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Anaheim-based side went on to score runs in the top of the 8th and 9th inning and closed out the reigning World Series champion to complete their first series sweep in 15 years.

Dave Roberts mismanagement at its finest. 1) 9th inning, should be Rushing, Kim, Ohtani 2) take out Rojas 3) pitching selection… you all got cocky and got swept. Serves you right.

With the loss, the Dodgers’ record went from 29-15 to 29-18. As for the Angels, their record improved to 20-25 from 17-25. Despite this outcome, there was no change in the standings of the two teams. The Angels remained bottom of the AL West while the 2024 World Series champions remain at the top of the NL West.
Dodgers commentator label Freeway Series sweep as ‘tough’
The Los Angeles Dodgers started the season from where they left off last year. The team went 7-0 to start the year and seemed unbeatable at that moment. Things though have changed since then. Following their series sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels, a commentator labeled this as a ‘tough’ series.

One major concern for the Dodgers is the injuries to their starting pitchers. Earlier this week, the team placed 2-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell on the 60-day injured list. Before him, Roki Sasaki was also injured.
In the game on Sunday, pitcher Tony Gonsolin was also left hurt and bleeding. While he did manage to throw four innings, he did gave up some runs, which eventually proved costly. Commentator Orel Hershiser expressed that the Angels took it to the Dodgers in this series.
This team (Angels) really took it to us. All of a sudden their bats wake up and the Dodgers pitching is just getting hurt and not being effective. This was a tough, tough series.

Things do not get easier for the Dodgers with all the injuries and the schedule they have. They will face their NL West rivals, the Arizona Diamondbacks, in a three-game series. A poor performance in this could see their NL West opponents take a huge step in chasing them down in the division standings.
