The Las Vegas Raiders’ game against their division rivals Los Angeles Chargers, was a dim affair with a combined 29 points on the scorebug. The Raiders were not on the better side of the scorebug either, as Justin Herbert and co won their second game of the season 20-9.

What was interesting for the Raiders in that game was the presence of Tom Brady. Brady, a seven-time champion and former quarterback for the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, owns a minority stake in the Raiders along with a broadcast contract with Fox Sports.

The presence of the former quarterback in the coaching booth with his headsets on drew ire from online fans. As the camera focused on Brady, ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported that Chip Kelly mentioned he and Brady speak two to three times a week to review film and discuss the Raiders’ game plan.

The key perspective of his presence and Schrager’s exposé has centered on the conflict of interest. Fans believed that Brady being an owner and an active participant in the Raiders’ booth gives the team an unfair advantage. Recently, Domonique Foxworth touched upon the much less-talked-about perspective.

Foxworth discussed whether Brady’s presence had any negative impact on the Raiders’ players. He noted he can either be a great broadcaster or a great owner, adding that he can’t do both. In doing so, Foxworth said that he would have been upset or uncomfortable if he were part of the team. He said on Get Up:

If you are going to take this risk, I would think that you would take this risk because the benefit was so great… He’s either such a great owner that he can’t walk away from that or he’s such a great broadcaster that he also has to be an owner. Or they just let him show up and do the games. I would be upset or uncomfortable if I were a player on a team.

The most striking detail is that Brady will call a Bears game next weekend and conduct interviews with players and coaches a week before Chicago faces Las Vegas.

Pete Carroll rejects Peter Schrager’s reveal-all report about Tom Brady and Chip Kelly

Pete Carroll, who has returned to the league after a hiatus, acknowledged Peter Schrager’s damning expose and rejected the claims. Carroll was speaking in the post-game interview when he first rejected the notion.

The head coach claimed that the reports were false but admitted that he and Chip have engaged in conversations with Tom Brady occasionally. He added Brady is a great asset and they are lucky to have him as an owner.

That’s not accurate. That’s not accurate. We have conversations. I talk to Tom, Chip talks to Tom, regularly.

On Monday, Carroll was once again questioned about concerns regarding Brady’s role. Carroll added:

I think Tom’s really tried to honor that really strictly… Our conversations that we have that are, really, they’re random. They’re not set up, they’re not structured in any way. He knows, he’s very respectful of what he does otherwise. He’s of the opinion that he doesn’t want to be that kind of a factor, so he’s not.

The league also issued a statement in the wake of the fresh controversy. The statement clarified that Brady is only allowed to participate in meetings or interview a player off-site. It read that he’s banned from attending practices or participating in production team meetings at their facilities.
