Dominic Thiem back from injury, starts preparations for Nitto ATP Finals
World no. 3 Dominic Thiem had an abrupt stop to his Vienna Open journey after losing to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. He was apparently not at the best of his health, losing in straight sets to the Russian.
After the match, Thiem said, “London shouldn’t be a problem.” He seems fully confident in competing at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in London.
Dominic Thiem training at new hard court facility
Austrian Thiem had a right foot injury that was nagging him for a while.
According to Herwig Straka, his manager and close confidante, he always gets this injury when he changes court surfaces. To counteract this, Thiem wears shoes with special insoles, tailored to his specifications. He also tapes his toes before every match, minimizing any risk. As such, Straka is confident that the issues have been fixed, and he should be good to go for London.
Thiem also worked with Alex Stober, a physiotherapist, using a special therapy to get the discomfort under control, which will help things going forward.
The 27-year-old has returned to training at a newly-opened hard court facility in Traiskirchen, an Austrian town. The 250000-euro Austrian Tennis Committee (ATC) facility was recently inaugurated, with Thiem and Stan Wawrinka having a training session on the same day. Moreover, with the opening of the facility, Thiem has decided to shift his base from Sudstadt to Traiskirchen. He found the conditions there to be perfect for a long-term training base.
Thiem will now look forward to participating in London. He will not be dropping any points from the event due to the new ATP rules. However, he will certainly be looking to impress everyone, improving on his second-place finish in 2019. He will find the Nitto ATP Finals to be an important stop on the way to his ultimate goal, which is achieving the world no. 1 position.
