“Dominic Thiem harmonizes incredibly with his new coach Nicola Massu,” says Boris Becker
Dominic Thiem has emerged as one of the most consistent players on tour in the past few years. The Austrian finally lifted his first major trophy at the US Open after he defeated Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set final. Apart from his US Open triumph, Thiem finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open and the Nitto ATP Finals last year.
Boris Becker, the former world number one believes that Thiem has not achieved all the success on his own. It is his coach Nicolas Massu’s efforts that have helped Thiem scale new heights. In 2019, Massu, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist joined Thiem’s coaching camp. However, this came after the Austrian split from his long time coach, Gunter Bresnik which did not end on good terms.
Just within a week since Massu joined Thiem’s camp, the Austrian lifted the Indian Wells Masters title which was a sign of many great things to come.
He has spent the best 18 months on the tennis court: Becker on Thiem
Boris Becker believes that Thiem has had the best possible 18 months on court, and he credits his coach, Massu for the Austrian’s improved performances. “Then there was a break, meanwhile, he harmonizes incredibly with his new coach Nicola Massu,” said Becker. “He has spent the best 18 months on the tennis court – also thanks to his coach,” he noted.
During his partnership with Massu, Thiem has reached three Grandslam finals and two consecutive ATP Finals. The Austrian also ended the 2020 season on the third place in the ATP Rankings just behind Rafael Nadal.
Dominic Thiem is currently quarantining in Adelaide ahead of the Australian Open 2021. However, in a huge setback, he arrived in Australia without his coach who tested positive for covid-19. Massu hopes to join the Austrian as soon as he can, but given the strict mandate of the Victorian government, it seems that Thiem will have to compete in Australia without his coach.
