Dominic Thiem needs time off to ‘recover from the head’, and ‘free his mind’ asserts father

Dominic Thiem 2
Dominic Thiem has not had the best of times this year on the tour. In the Australian Open he failed to move past the fourth-round, ousted by Grigor Dimitrov in humiliating fashion. He lost the match in three straight sets, 4-6 4-6 0-6. In the Middle Eastern leg of the tour he didn’t do any better.
He won just one match in the Qatar Open, before losing his next match to Roberto Bautista Agut. Agut beat him in three sets, 7-6 2-6 6-4. In the Dubai Open that followed, he lost in the first match that he played. A straight sets defeat against the South African Lloyd Harris, 3-6 4-6.
Dominic Thiem withdrawing from the Monte Carlo Open raised eyebrows

After the unceremonious exit from the Dubai Open, where he had complained of problems with his foot, it was expected that he would skip the hard court event at Miami. His father, Wolfgang Thiem, explained the problem with Dominic’s foot.
He said that sliding over hard courts causes callus to develop over the years and when the same area is under stress, irritation can happen. He said that it’s not something which is very serious, but are like small things that keep repeating themselves.
Senior Thiem said, “Dominic always has problems sliding on hard courts. A callus develops over the years – and if this area is heavily stressed, irritation can arise.” He continued, “But these are small things that just happen again and again when Dominic plays on hardcourt.”
Domic Thiem withdrawing from the Monte Carlo Open raised eyebrows because it’s a clay court event. And since the clay court season is about to start, missing tournaments might be unwise. But, Wolfgang explained the situation. He said Dominic needs to recover mentally, feel fresh again, and only then will he pick up a racket again and start practicing.
Wolfgang Thiem said, “ He(Dominic Thiem) needs recovery for the head, to free his mind,” He continued “I don’t think he watched the tournament in Miami. He’ll start training again in the next days.”
