Dominic Thiem ‘not too happy’ with his ATP Cup opening match against Matteo Berrettini as the Austrian preferred a lightweight opponent
The current World No.3 , Dominic Thiem is set to face Italian rising star, Matteo Berrettini is the opening match of the 2021 ATP Cup starting on Tuesday, February 2nd.
This is one of the fiercest rivalries in the contemporary men’s tennis with both the players having won against each other twice out of their four matches.
Thiem, who clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, said that he has played some close games against the Italian deep into tournaments and none will start as a clear favorite as they renew their rivalry at Brisbane on Tuesday.
Thiem would preferred a lightweight opponent as Berrettini is a ‘big big player’
Austrian tennis star, Dominic Thiem opened up on his rivalry with rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini.
He said he was eagerly looking forward to playing Berrettini again, adding that they share cordial ties outside tennis.
“We have a very good relationship and always (have) fun matches against each other,” the World No.3 said.
However, he added that he would have preferred playing a lightweight opponent in his opening ATP Cup tie as Berrettini is a “big, big player”.
“I am not too happy that he is the first guy that I have to face in the new year after quite a while, without an official match,” Thiem said.
Thiem will be leading his country from the front at the ATP Cup starting tomorrow where as, Italy’s progression in to the tournament will largely depend on how Berrettini performs in his matches.
