Former US Open singles winner Dominic Thiem has finally opened up about his retirement rumors, stating that he will retire at the end of 2024. Earlier in the week, there were many speculations about the Austrian’s retirement.

In a recent video released by an official tennis channel, Thiem listed the reasons for his retirement, stating that his wrist injury has been the main reason for this decision.

After the 2020 season, where the Austrian won the US Open, the sudden injury forced him off the Tour. Till now, the 30-year-old could not get back to his old form, forcing him to retire.

The season 2024 is going to be my last. I'm going to finish my career with the end of the season. There are some reasons behind it: firstly, of course, my wrist. It is not exactly the way it should be and it's not exactly the way I want it.

Furthermore, the Austrian also spoke about his inner feelings, which also played a massive role in his decision-making. With only a few match wins behind him, Thiem has dropped out of the Top 100 and is unable to find his way back in. 

Second reason is my inner feeling. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time. I was thinking very carefully about it.

At the start of the year, the Austrian had set a goal to reach the Top 50 by the end of this year, but it seems like it won’t be possible given his form lately. He even faced the same wrist injury scare earlier this year, throwing more doubts at him and possibly urging him to retire.

The rumors were that Thiem would play his last match at the Vienna Open. He reached a career-high of World No. 3 in 2020 after winning the US Open. However, a year later, the Austrian suffered a nasty injury that proved fatal to date, causing him to retire. 

I've had success and trophies which I never dreamt of. It was an incredible journey. In the end I came to the conclusion that this decision to end my career at the end of this season is the only right one.
