Dominic Thiem reveals his emotions on winning a Grand Slam after losing in three finals earlier
In 2020, World No.3 Dominic Thiem finally tasted Grand Slam glory at the US Open by beating Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-setter. It was certainly an amazing year for the Austrian star, who had previously failed to win three of his Grand Slam finals.
It was great dedication and persistence displayed by Thiem who kept training despite his losses at the Majors that led him to finally win one.
‘These defeats gnawed at me badly’ – Thiem
Before the 2020 US Open, Thiem had reached 2 finals at the French Open and 1 final at the Australian Open. He unfortunately, lost all of these matches. In an interview, the World No.3 revealed how it felt to lose a Majors final multiple times, “These defeats gnawed at me badly, after Australia it was very, very bad…At some point you will run out of time.”
The Austrian is level now with Austrian tennis legend Thomas Muster in terms of Grand Slams. But Thiem would surely like to go past him to set a record of his own. If Thiem wishes to do that, he should be looking to increase his Grand Slam tally at the upcoming Australian Open where he lost in the finals last year to World No.1 Novak Djokovic.
Thiem also has a shot at replacing Rafael Nadal on the World No.2 spot as the Austrian trails him just by 750 points on the charts. Clearly, a lot of achievements lie in store for Thiem at the Australian Open. However, he is going to have to battle for it as there are numerous players who could challenge him for the title.
