Hungarian skipper Dominik Szoboszlai scored an audacious 99th minute penalty, rescuing a point against Germany in a recent Nations League encounter. The Liverpool star successfully attempted a Panenka penalty, salvaging a 1-1 draw for the home side.
The Nations League group stage match unfolded at Budapest’s Puskas Arena, with Germany opening the scoring after an uneventful first half. After having failed to register a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, the visitors finally took a lead in the 76th minute through midfielder Felix Nmecha‘s strike.
Germany were on their way to seal a win, until Hungary was awarded a penalty for a handball by Robin Koch in the 99th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai converted to deny the visitors their fourth successive win. Szoboszlai surprisingly attempted a cheeky Panenka penalty kick. Defying expectations, the 24-year-old calmly slotted the ball straight through the middle of the net, away from goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.
Nubel dove towards the right side, misjudging Szoboszlai’s strike. This audacious penalty technique was made famous by legendary Czech star Antonin Panenka. However, in recent days, players have often failed to convert Panenka penalties, with Manchester City star Bernardo Silva being among them.

Virgil van Dijk explains ‘incident’ that left Dominik Szoboszlai in tears in the Nations League
Reds’ skipper Virgil van Dijk revealed details of the ‘scary’ incident that left Hungarian skipper and Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in tears. The 24-year-old was seen crying after Hungary assistant manager Adam Szalai collapsed. This was in a recent Nations League match against the Netherlands.
Szalai fell unconscious just seven minutes after the start of the match and had to be rushed to the hospital. His condition, later revealed, was stable. Van Dijk, while speaking after the match, described the medical emergency as shocking and scary. He also added that he asked Szoboszlai about whether he had previously experienced such a feeling before. To this, the Hungarian replied by saying that he had.
Szoboszlai had witnessed a similar moment at the 2024 Euros. Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga had collapsed on the pitch following a brutal head clash with Scotland’s Angus Gunn. He suffered a concussion and a broken cheekbone following the injury.
