Hungarian skipper Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears after assistant manager Adam Szalai collapsed onto the pitch, during a Nations League encounter against the Netherlands. The match was halted for some time due to the unprecedented medical emergency.

The Liverpool star was seen teary eyed with his shirt covering his face after player-turned manager Adam Szalai collapsed on the sidelines of the Johan Cruyff stadium. Just seven minutes into the match, the ex-Hungarian captain fell ill and lost consciousness while seated on the bench.

The Hungarian team and staff quickly reacted to the emergency, forming a protective ring around Szalai. He was then treated by the medical team, as the entire stadium fell into silence awaiting news regarding Szalai’s condition.

The 36-year-old assistant manager regained consciousness sometime later, following which, he was rushed to the hospital on a stretcher. Certain sources suggested that Szalai might have suffered from a sudden seizure.

Hungarian officials later confirmed that his condition is stable, and that he is being examined at an Amsterdam hospital. A former Hungarian captain, Szalai had most recently joined Marco Rossi’s coaching staff at the national team. He made 86 appearances for Hungary, scoring 26 goals.

The match resumed soon after the ten-minute interruption. Adam Szalai’s medical emergency is the second such blow to the Hungarian side in the last six months. Earlier this year, striker Barnabas Varga collapsed following a bizarre head collision in a Euro 2024 match against Scotland.

The Dutch took a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first half. Wout Weghorst confidently scored a 21st minute penalty, thanks to a Tamas Nikitscher handball.

Cody Gakpo converted another penalty, after Zsolt Nagy fouled Donyell Malen in the box. Denzel Dumfries then scored his team’s third goal in the 64th minute. Teun Koopmeiners then completed the scoring with a brilliant header in the 85th minute, assisted by Dumfries.

The win propelled Netherlands into the knock-out stages of the Nations League, as they now remain second in the qualifying group with eight points. Hungary, on the other hand, have just five points from five matches, having won a single game against Bosnia.
