Donald Trump made a huge statement regarding sports on his Truth Social account on Sunday. The U.S. President demanded that the Cleveland Guardians revert to their ‘Indians‘ name. The Guardians, though, were not the only team Trump demanded to change their name.

In a lengthy post on social media, the 79-year-old also demanded that the Washington Commanders go back to their original name of ‘Redskins‘. The 47th U.S. President seemingly threatened to block the stadium deal of the NFL side if they did not comply with his demand. The Commanders are looking to undergo a proposed $3.7 billion renovation drive at the RFK Stadium.

The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for the Redskins Football Team.

After his demands regarding the Commanders, Trump shifted his focus to the Guardians. He spoke of the prestige and heritage of the name ‘Indians’ and labeled them as one of the original six teams of baseball.

There is a big clamoring for the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were 5 or 4 years ago. We are a Country of Tradition and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!

This is not the first time that Trump has urged the Commanders and the Guardians to revert to their original names. The U.S. President, earlier this year, wanted the Washington-based side to honor the local Native American population and take back the Redskins name.

Before the game against the Athletics, Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti expressed that the organization has no plans of revisiting their old name.

We understand there are different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago but obviously it’s a decision we made. We’ve got the opportunity to build a brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future that’s in front of us

Chris Antonetti told the media

As for the Guardians, their former name Indians, had been facing a lot of criticism. The team was one of the first members of the American League in 1901 and adopted the name Cleveland Indians in 1915. They would go on to win 2 World Series titles under this name before making a massive change.

In 2020, the team announced that they would drop the name ‘Indians’ from them and picked up Guardians as their name later on. By this time, the team had already dropped “Chief Wahoo” as its primary logo. Since 2022, the team has been using the name Cleveland Guardians as its official name.

Amidst name change demand from Donald Trump, Guardians win series against Athletics

The Cleveland Guardians are having a mixed season this year. Following their American League Central Division win last year, the Guards have looked like a shadow of their former self. Amid the name change demand on Sunday, the team claimed an important series win over the Athletics.

After having a 40-38 record, the Guardians lost 10 games in a row which saw them fall way behind in the AL Central race. Since then, they have picked up their form once again.

They would first sweep the Houston Astros, who had swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, before winning 3 out of the 4 games against fellow AL Central side, the Chicago White Sox. The Guardians started the 2nd half of the season with an 8-6 win on Friday before losing 8-2 to the Athletics on Saturday.

In the game on Sunday, David Fry became the hero for them. The Designated Hitter (DH) went 2-for-5 and picked up a career high 4 RBI in the game. The team thus went on to win 8-2 and won the series.

The 48-50 Guardians will now be hoping to keep the winning run going as they welcome the struggling Baltimore Orioles to Progressive Field for a 4-game series. After that, they will turn their attention to their division rivals, the Kansas City Royals.
