This past Friday, Olympian Hunter Hess found himself in the spotlight following some anti-ICE remarks during the Winter Olympics. Amidst the backlash, US President Donald Trump called him a “real loser” and took a swipe at him.

Hess, who is part of the American freestyle skiing team, had some bold words regarding the state of his country during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics at the San Siro stadium in Milan.

During the ceremony, the 27-year-old claimed that he was having “mixed emotions” representing the United States at the moment. The ski star further expressed that he did not represent everything that was happening in the country.

It brings up mixed emotions to represent the US right now I thinkJust cause I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US.

Hunter Hess told the reporters

Hess’ strong comments against the (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) comments caused massive outrage on social media. Many users on X slammed him and urged the others to boycott the event and not tune in to his performance.

On Sunday, Donald Trump would address these comments from him. The US President was not fond of the words used by the skier and blasted him. In a post on Truth Social, the 79-year-old called the athlete a “real loser” and claimed it was “hard” to root for someone like that.

U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Donald Trump said regarding Hunter Hess

The comments of Hess refer to the recent ICE shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On January 7, the ICE agents would fatally shoot a 37-year-old woman named Renee Nicole Good.

Her death sparked a massive outcry on social media as many took a stand against ICE. Two weeks later, another person was gunned down.

An ICU nurse and Minnesota resident, Alex Pretti, was shot by two ICE agents during a widespread protest against Operation Metro Surge. There has been major unrest in the US since these two incidents.

Hunter Hess is not the only Olympian who took issue with ICE during the Winter Olympics

Hunter Hess has found himself in hot water. Since his comments on Friday regarding the situation in the United States, the ski star has been highly criticized online. He, though, was not the only Olympian who took issue with the ICE.

During the Opening Ceremony, his teammate Chris Lillis also spoke out. The skier, who won a gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Games, expressed that he was “heartbroken” by the incidents in his country.

I feel heartbroken about what’s happening in the United States… I think that as a country, we need to focus on respecting everybody’s rights and making sure that we’re treating our citizens as well as anybody, with love and respect.

Chris Lillis said

Several eyes will now be on them as they look to put this behind them and turn their focus to their events. Hess is scheduled to take part in the freestyle skiing qualifiers on February 19.

Meanwhile, Lillis will be part of the aerials team and will compete on February 17.
