On Sunday (December 14), when the Jewish community was celebrating the Hanukkah festival at Archer Park near Bondi Beach in Sydney, two men fired shots, killing around 16 people, including a 10-year-old girl. One of the alleged gunmen was shot dead on the spot by the police, while the other was wounded and taken into custody.
Those two men, a father-son duo, were 50-year-old Sajid Akram and 24-year-old Naveed Akram. Home affairs minister Tony Burke on Monday said Naveed is an Australian citizen, while his father, who migrated to Australia in the late 1990s, was not. As per reports, at least one of them had links to Australia’s pro-Islamic State (IS) network.
In the wake of the event, a user shared a post on X that garnered over 18 million views. The caption of the post read: “One of these men was banned from Australia“. The pictures that he shared were of Naveed and Novak Djokovic, saying the Australian government deported Djokovic but not the shooter.
Although there is no link between the shooting incident and Djokovic, those condemning the Australian government have started citing Djokovic’s vaccine saga, which saw him being deported just before the 2022 Australian Open. Donald Trump Jr., the American businessman and US President Donald Trump‘s son, was one such who used the aforementioned post to censure the Australian government.
Amazing Tweet. So said. So true.

The police have called the shooting a terrorist attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has vowed to tighten the already strict gun laws. The mass shooting was considered the deadliest in the country since the Port Arthur massacre, where a gunman killed 35 people.
Sergiy Stakhovsky thinks Novak Djokovic has the better chance of winning a Grand Slam title than Alexander Zverev
Earlier this year, Novak Djokovic admitted that he experiences “trauma” when he visits Melbourne because of the deportation saga. But it was at the Australian Open that the 38-year-old has clinched the most Grand Slam titles.

He lifted the Melbourne Major 10 times, last winning it in 2023 by defeating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. Last year, eventual champion Jannik Sinner knocked him out in the semifinals, while this year, he was forced to give a walkover to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev in the last four because of an injury. The 2026 Australian Open is the next Major, and, as per former player Sergiy Stakhovsky, Djokovic has a better chance of winning it than Zverev.
Novak has every chance of winning another Grand Slam. I would even say he has a better chance than Zverev. This year, he has reached four semi-finals. I think he can win anywhere. His excellent statistics in Australia give him plenty of reasons to think about how he will approach this tournament and what will happen next.
Sergiy Stakhovsky told BTU
Zverev is still chasing Grand Slam glory. Thrice he reached the final of a Major, losing all. Djokovic, after the Australian Open this year, suffered straight-set defeats at the hands of Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon, while at the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz stopped him from advancing to the final.
Djokovic finished the season after lifting his 101st title in the ATP 250 Hellenic Championship by defeating Lorenzo Musetti. He later skipped the ATP Finals because of a shoulder niggle.
Prior to the Athens event, Djokovic became the third man in the Open Era after Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors to win 100 or more singles titles when he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the Geneva Open final. Djokovic also reached the title clash of the Miami Open but failed to end his Big Titles drought with a straight-set defeat to Jakub Mensik.
