US President Donald Trump was in attendance at Yankee Stadium on Thursday during the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. He would meet the New York Yankees before their game against the Detroit Tigers and rally the team with a motivational speech.
The reigning American League champions had lost 2 games against the Tigers and were on the brink of getting swept by the AL Central division leaders. Trump, who is a supporter of the Yankees, would speak with the players in the clubhouse before their showdown.
In this, the 47th US President would issue a battle cry and motivate the team. He would reminisce about his friendship with late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner as the team fights for a playoff spot.
George used to go, for some reason, I don’t know what it was, we won every time I came… Every time we came, we’d win a game. He’d call me. You think that was easy, sitting with him for a game, it wasn’t. It was brutal. You were exhausted at the end, but he won. And you’re going to win. You’re going to go all the way.
Donald Trump told the New York Yankees players
The rally cry from Trump seemed to have worked for the Yankees on Thursday. Before this game, they had been outscored 23-3 in the opening 2 games of the series.
Aaron Judge got things started for the team in the first inning. He would hit a solo home run on a 3-2 full count pitch to open the scoring. He went yard again with another solo shot in the 3rd inning to make it a 4-1 game.
His 2nd homer of the night was his 46th home run of the 2025 season. It was a special one for him as he tied Joe DiMaggio for 4th in the All-time Yankees home run list at 361.
The offense of the Yankees kept up producing hits and led the team to a 9-3 victory over the Tigers. This saw them avoid getting swept.

Aaron Judge dubs 9-3 win over Tigers as “surreal day” following meeting with Donald Trump
The New York Yankees claimed an important 9-3 win over the Detroit Tigers and avoided getting swept. Aaron Judge, who homered twice following his meeting with Donald Trump, would later claim that it was a “surreal day.”

The Yankees captain would go 3-for-4 in the game with 2 home runs. His team picked up 14 hits in this massive win over the Tigers.
In the post-game interview, Judge expressed that he had never met a sitting President before and noted importance of the day.
No matter your beliefs, I think just especially today, 9/11, the strength and resilience that New York City showed during one of the darkest hours, darkest times, it’s just an important day for all of us to come together, really. It’s just kind of a surreal moment, surreal day, and for us to come out with a big win, especially the last two losses we had, it was just an all-around great day.

As per Bryan Hoch, Trump became just the third sitting President to attend a Yankees game and the first since George W. Bush threw out the first ceremonial pitch before the 2001 World Series between the Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The other president was Warren G. Harding in 1923.
