Donald Trump, business mogul and the current President of the United States of America, isn’t a huge fan of the new dynamic kickoff rule that the NFL introduced in 2024. They had introduced some minor tweaks to the rule in the fall before the new season. The changes in kickoff were initially brought by the organization to prevent or try to reduce injuries while promoting more kickoff returns.
The septuagenarian, who’s an ardent sports fan, announced his distaste for the changes through one of his iconic Truth Social rants. It’s not the first time Trump has outspoken about this particular change, having been equally vocal last year.
In his latest rant, Trump claimed that the new changes are at least as dangerous as the older version of kickoff, which he called normal. He called the latest changes making the sport sissy.
It’s at least as dangerous as the ‘normal’ kickoff, and looks like hell. The ball is moving, and the players are not, the exact opposite of what football is all about… Sissy’ football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas?

He also compared the new rule to golf, intentionally designing newer types of balls that would limit how far professional players can hit. In fact, there have been discussions on this subject by some golf organizers. Trump seemed to have subtly snubbed them as well. He concluded his rant with the hope that such changes won’t be brought in college football.
Under the current rules, the kicker’s teammates must stay in their spots on the field until the kicked ball either lands or is touched by a member of the receiving team. According to the Associated Press, this change, implemented last year, led to a notable jump in kickoff returns. Kickoff returns rose from a record-low 21.8 percent in 2023 to 32.8 percent in the following season.
Although there’s no official data yet on the rule’s direct impact, early evidence indicates a significant decline in injuries. Kickoff plays have historically produced roughly four times as many concussions as passing or running plays. However, concussions on kickoffs have dropped by about 43 percent compared with the 2021–23 seasons.
Donald Trump have long waged a war against NFL
The fact that Donald Trump has spent a considerable amount of time during his presidential tenure on the NFL is widely known. The business tycoon tried to buy the Baltimore Colts and the Buffalo Bills at different points in his business career, both meeting unfortunate ends.

The latest presidential term made him the first sitting president of the country to make an appearance or attend a Super Bowl. Trump was famously in attendance for the Super Bowl LIX clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was in dispute with Taylor Swift, the internationally acclaimed and loved singer, who was also in attendance that day.
In the offseason, Trump took his issue with the Washington Commanders. Trump posted a similar rant and asked the franchise to revert to its old moniker, one which included a derogatory word that’s used as a slur against Native Americans. At one point, he even suggested being an impediment to the franchise’s plan to construct a new stadium in the city and make a return to Washington from Landover unless his demands were met.
The demand was that the Commanders should change back to their old name. Despite all this, the Commanders braved through. On August 1, the DC Council voted 9-3 in favor and approved a deal between the team and the city. Although they have a second vote coming up this week, it is expected that the results will be identical.
