It has been three years since Dwight Howard played in the NBA. Despite being away from the league since 2022 , the former NBA Champion still remains in the headlines from time to time. Undoubtedly, one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game, Howard has played in various teams during his 18-year career in the league and won the NBA Championship during his second stint with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

Dwight Howard was drafted by the Orlando Magic as the number one pick in the 2004 NBA draft. He led the club to the NBA Finals in 2009, beating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals before losing to Kobe Bryant‘s Lakers in the NBA Finals. He won his first and only NBA Championship with James with the Lakers.

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year was elected twice into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this year as an individual player and as a member of the Redeem Team. Howard was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Shaquille O’Neal, who was his idol, but has had several heated exchanges with the four-time NBA Champion.

United States President Donald Trump has not had a great relationship with any of the big names of the NBA. While most of the players were critical of the current President, Howard did step out and speak from a different perspective. He said he wanted to speak to Trump almost a year ago. The eight-time NBA All-Star had a suggestion for Trump in a tweet he posted recently.

Random. I honestly feel like the president should make one year of service mandatory for everyone born in America. A lot of other countries do it. And I think it would help with discipline and structure. I’m curious what yall think would this help America or nah.

Howard wanted his nation to follow in the footsteps of countries such as South Korea, Israel and Finland, as it would instil discipline and structure among the citizens of the United States.

Fans react to Dwight Howard’s post regarding mandatory military service

Howard’s tweet went viral in no time and prompted a huge number of reactions across social media. Here are some of the reactions:

Dwight Howard on enrolling into college

Howard was one of the most successful players upon completing high school. He decided to skip college and declared himself for the 2004 NBA draft, and the rest is history. He averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds in his rookie season which made him the youngest player in NBA history to average a double double in the regular season.

Former Memphis Grizzlies player Kenny Lofton Jr. revealed on social media that he is going back to Louisiana Tech next month to finish his college basketball career after making stops in the NBA and the CBA in China. Howard, on hearing the news, was quick to react and wondered if he could enrol to pursue a degree and play NCAA ball.

Although Howard was clearly joking, his comments point to a growing gray area in college sports today.
