Donald Trump-supporting journalist blasts Caitlin Clark for bowing down to WNBA woke culture

Caitlin Clark called out by Donald Trump supporter Megyn Kelly for latest interview comments

Caitlin Clark, recently crowned TIME’s Athlete of the Year for 2024, has found herself under fire for comments she made about privilege and race in the WNBA. These remarks, intended to shed light on systemic issues, sparked a fierce backlash from conservative commentator Megyn Kelly, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.

After a historic rookie season with the Indiana Fever, Caitlin Clark acknowledged the contributions of Black players to the league and admitted benefiting from white privilege in her basketball journey. Kelly, who has been critical of progressive trends in sports and culture, took to social media to denounce Clark’s statements. Her criticism targeted what she described as Clark’s “self-flagellation.”

Look at this. She’s on the knee all but apologizing for being white and getting attention. The self-flagellation. The “oh pls pay attention to the black players who are REALY the ones you want to celebrate.” Condescending. Fake. Transparent. Sad.

Clark’s remarks came during her interview with TIME after being crowned the Athlete of the Year by the leading magazine.

As a white person, there is privilege. A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them.

Caitlin Clark said in the interview

While Caitlin Clark’s intention seemed to target the importance of amplifying the contributions of Black athletes, it opened her up to criticism from those who view such acknowledgments as unnecessary or divisive – people such as Megyn Kelly.

Kelly’s public disapproval aligns with her track record of challenging social justice narratives in sports, frequently branding them as performative. The commentator’s alignment with Donald Trump, particularly after delivering a speech on his behalf during the presidential race, lends further weight to her influence among conservative audiences.

Caitlin Clark comes clean about infamous DiJonai Carrington incident

Caitlin Clark’s rookie season also included a contentious playoff moment involving DiJonai Carrington of the Connecticut Sun. During Game 1 of their playoff series, Carrington’s aggressive defense against Clark culminated in a physical play that went viral. Carrington’s contact with Clark’s face during a shot attempt led to speculation about intent, with some media outlets fanning the flames of controversy.

USA Today columnist Christine Brennan questioned Carrington’s actions. These claims prompted backlash from the WNBA Players’ Association (WNBPA), which condemned Brennan’s approach and called for her playoff credentials to be revoked. Reflecting on the incident during her TIME interview, Clark dismissed any notion of intentional harm.

Never once did that cross my mind, that it was on purpose. I’ve been poked in the eye many times playing basketball. It happens.

Caitlin Clark said

Caitlin Clark further expressed solidarity with Carrington and the WNBPA, criticizing the media narrative that sought to villainize Carrington. After an offseason filled with questions about her fame and growing popularity, it certainly is no surprise to see that her comments during her tell-all interview with TIME have created a firestorm across the internet.
