Indiana Fever trade for Sophie Cunningham to join Caitlin Clark

The majority of WNBA players do not appreciate newly elected Donald Trump due to his various policies. However, a few, such as Phoenix Mercury star Sophie Cunningham are bonafide MAGA supporters. At the same time, she also admires Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

Her admiration for the Fever star was evident when Cunningham and Mercury teammate Natasha Cloud were seen conversing with Clark during the WNBA All-Star weekend. Their interaction seemed to suggest that both the Mercury stars were excited to have Clark and her millions of followers in the WNBA.

That was in sharp contrast to the narrative surrounding the league at the time where it seemed as if many players were jealous of the attention Clark was receiving. Now the 28-year-old Mercury guard will get more chances to improve her friendship with Clark as ESPN’s Alexa Philippou revealed.

Superstar Satou Sabally was long rumored to want to join Caitlin Clark in Indiana. However, her wish to be a part of a championship contender sees her moving to the Phoenix Mercury. That switch sees Sophie Cunningham move to the Indiana Fever as part of a three-team trade.

Sophie Cunningham wanted to team up with Caitlin Clark

The Fever sent their No. 8 pick in this year’s WNBA Draft to the Dallas Wings along with NaLyssa Smith. In return, they get the Mercury’s No. 19 draft pick to go along with Cunningham. For the 6′ 1″ guard though, she sees her wish coming true after talking about it on The Travis Hearn Podcast this past October.

I think that she’s a gem. I’ve didn’t know her, but All-Star weekend, we kind of bantered back and forth a little bit. She’s lovely. I’m a fan, like I would love to play with her one day for real.

What Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are getting in the former Missouri star are two great abilities. One is, she is a terrific clutch defender and scores from deep at will. Along with those basketball skills, she is a feisty competitor. She does not stop from going up against anyone if the team needs that.

Cunningham and Clark might differ in their opinion on Donald Trump. But the Rookie of the Year now has two feisty veterans who could be their lead enforcers next season. After all the physical hits she endured last season, it seems the Fever wanted solutions.
