Amid growing calls for transparency surrounding the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, President Donald Trump has shifted his focus to an entirely different arena, the NFL. The President has doubled down on urging the Washington Commanders to revert to their former name, the Redskins, to ensure the glory associated with the former name.
Two weeks back, Trump had commented that Washington’s old moniker shouldn’t have been removed. He claimed that the current moniker doesn’t feel right with him. However, he feels that a couple of wins would change his mindset. It seems that the wins would not be enough either.
In a Truth Social post, the President ordered the owners of the Commanders as well as the baseball team Cleveland Guardians, to revert to their old monikers. The Commanders were known as the Washington Redskins before changing their name after ages ahead of the 2020 season.
He claimed that native people have requested such a change. He added on to allege that the teams have taken away their heritage and prestige by changing their branding and names. Trump also subtly threw a shade at his predecessor and how the country was ruled back then.
The Washington “Whatever’s” should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!

In 2024, a Washington Post poll found that while many people remain unimpressed with the “Commanders” name, there is very low support for reverting to the team’s former name, which was a commonly used slur for native people. Recently, in 2025, Washington Post also revealed a new statistic that showed that there has been an increase in support in the DC Area.
The Cleveland Guardians responded to Donald Trump’s comments
During a media session on Sunday, Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said he was unaware of Donald Trump’s comments before the meeting. Nevertheless, Antonetti admitted that reverting to the “Indians” name is “not something [he has been] tracking or [has] been paying a lot of attention to.”

We’ve gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future.
Chris Antonetti said
The US President has a long history associated with the Guardians. At one point, the business mogul even planned to buy the Guardians, but was rejected.
He has expressed his distaste for the Guardians since the name change. While campaigning in 2024, Donald Trump repeatedly voiced his dissatisfaction with the name change. During a rally in Ohio, he mocked the Cleveland Guardians’ moniker, likening it to a group of people who are managing a trust fund.
The Washington Commanders are yet to comment on the latest advancement in the whole name thing. However, Josh Harris, the owner, has previously commented that the new brand has been embraced by the players, coaching staff, and other personnel.
