Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic is enjoying a dream run at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the 28-year-old is through to the semifinals. The 13th seed beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in a midnight thriller on Wednesday to advance to the medal rounds at the 2024 Games.

Vekic beat Kostyuk 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(8) in almost three hours to book herself a place in the last-four stage. Before the quarterfinal, the World No. 21 defeated second seed Coco Gauff in straight sets in the third round. Then on Wednesday, Vekic saved the day in a thrilling contest with Kostyuk.

Both players, who have put on inspirational performances this year in Grand Slam tournaments, fought tooth-to-tooth before Vekic walked away with the match. At the end of a tense third set, Vekic saw her first two match points slip away before the tiebreak. The Croatian then found herself a hair away from defeat when Kostyuk held her own match point at 6-5 in the decisive breaker.

However, Vekic stayed calm and composed and won the decider in the tiebreak. It was ecstasy for the Croatian afterward as she became the first woman from her country to reach the singles semifinal at the Games.

Donna Vekic breaks down in tears!

Donna Vekic was over the moon as she entered the medal rounds at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Croatian was overwhelmed with emotions and it showed on her face as soon as she completed the win over Marta Kostyuk after a grueling battle for three hours.

Vekic broke down in tears and cried inconsolably for a few seconds with her head between her knees while her team and Croatian fans at the stadium cheered with all their might. The video of a crying Vekic went viral on social media.

Notably, Vekic has been in sublime form in the 2024 season as the Croatian made it to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the 2024 Championships. The World No. 21 also reached the final at Bad Homburg Open and also made it to the semifinals of the Linz Open earlier this year. It is to be seen if she bags an Olympic medal to script history.
