The news taking the sports world by storm is that of the $765 million contract Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets. In a move that greatly changed the landscape of baseball, where the superstar switched from one Big Apple franchise to another, die-hard fans such as Donovan Mitchell had different emotions.
The 26-year-old signed a colossal 15-year $765 million contract that makes it the largest sports contract in the world. But more importantly, he left the most popular name in baseball, the New York Yankees, to join the cross-city rival Mets.
Donovan Mitchell has a close connection to the New York Mets. His father was director of player relations for the ball club, meaning a young Spida was often around MLB locker rooms. Growing up, his first posters were of Mets players.
That is what brought out an ecstatic reaction from the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar. Once the news broke, Juan Soto celebrated by jumping into a pool at his residence. At the same time though, Mitchell facetimed the newest member of his favorite baseball team.

This was his reaction while posting a screenshot of their conversation on his X account. The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar’s reactions make it clear his New York Mets, living in the shadows of the Yankees for a very long time, finally found their biggest superstar. Now the New York native can dream about the World Series.
Juan Soto deal a bright spot for Donovan Mitchell amidst loss to Heat
Donovan Mitchell had the best finish to his night when the Juan Soto deal was completed. However, earlier, he and his Cleveland Cavaliers did not have the best of nights in the NBA. The team, spearheaded by the five-time All-Star, sits at the top of the NBA.
On Sunday, they lost their fourth game of the season at the hands of the Miami Heat. The game was the second of their back-to-back road games and the Cavaliers faced a red-hot heat playing at home. Not the ideal situation to expect to continue their own four-game winning streak.
Matters became worse towards the end of the first quarter when standout forward Evan Mobley left the game with a sprained ankle. That loss meant the Cleveland Cavaliers lost their defensive efficiency which the Heat took full advantage of.
Mitchell himself did not have a good night as he shot just 31% from the field and worse from the three-point line. But he can head home knowing that there are four days of rest before they suit up for their next match.
