“Don’t think that will be a massive worry for them” – Michael Vaughan plays down India’s leg spin struggle ahead of T20 World Cup

Australia sealed a 12 run victory in the final T20I to avoid a whitewash at the hands of India. And it was the two legspinners, Mitchell Swepson and Adam Zampa who spun their side to victory. Swepson scalped three crucial wickets while giving away just 23 runs in his four overs. On other hand, Zampa ably supported him with his three miserly overs, including one in the death which saw finisher Hardik Pandya perish.
The Aussies’ move of fielding two specialist spinners comes in light of the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. And former England skipper Michael Vaughan feels the duo can be troublesome for some big guns in the gala event of T20 cricket. Vaughan points out that this struggle against leg spinners should not be a big worry for the visitors given their great record against spinners. Zampa and Swepson had a great series as they shared eight wickets giving away just 146 runs in the three games.
“In T20 cricket, I don’t think, it’s only India who struggles against two quality legspinners. They have got great variations, got control and they are both full of confidence. So this pair will probably have a word over a few and it’s not gonna be the Indians. In Indian conditions, I also feel that the Indian players play spin well as any side, so I don’t think that will be a massive worry for them,” Vaughan told on Cricbuzz Live.
A game of variations

Vaughan went to explain how the demand for variations in the shortest format has shaped the evolution of bowlers over time. Left-arm seamers and leg spinners are the talk of the town in this era of T20 cricket. and Vaughan feels India have potential on both fronts. The Englishman heaped praises for T Natarajan who was exceptional in his debut series. He went on to add that he is looking forward to the return of Kuldeep Yadav who showed immense potential in his early days.
“Throughout that next year leading into the world cup, that will certainly an area teams will look at, trying to get two of them in. I have seen since a long long time, in T20 cricket you talk about mystery spinners, you talk about spinners who can take it either way. There are as many off-spinners who bowl the doosra these days. But not many have that because they have been a bit more strict on the actions. So most team have plenty of legspinners. They have domestic competitions to potentially have a look at. Left arm seamers, leg spinners, they are the two areas I try to focus on as an international talent managemnet group, trying to find them.“
“Natarajan has been magnificent for India. Left-arm, great variations, great skills. Though India have another legspinner they can potentially bring into the group to have a look at. That would be something I personally would look out because the more of them you can get, its harder for the opposing batters to face,” he signs off.
With the loss in Sydney last night, the Kangaroos snapped India’s 11 game winning streak in the format. But the visitors should be proud that they clinched the series without the service of their big guns, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
