Canadian rapper and singer Drake made headlines as Argentina beat Canada to book a spot in the final of the 2024 Copa America. While Argentina have won the tournament a record fifteen times, Canada were making their first appearance at the tournament. Ahead of the crucial fixture, Drake opted to place an enormous bet on Canada beating Argentina.
The rapper was so sure of Canada winning the game that he opted to place a $300,000 bet on his country. However, Lionel Messi and co. had other plans as La Albiceleste secured a 2-0 victory on the night. Emiliano Martinez‘s brilliance between the sticks gave Canada no chance against the 2022 World Cup winners. As Argentine celebrations came to a close, fans quickly recalled Drake’s enormous bet.
Supporters couldn’t help but laugh at the rapper for his bad luck and for making such a poorly informed decision against the World Cup winners. Fans recalled the ‘Drake curse‘, wherein any team the celebrity supports manages to embarrass themselves.
However, Canada go out with their heads held high after making it to the semis in their first-ever Copa America.
Canada script history in first-ever Copa America appearance
48th ranked Canada were undoubtedly the surprise team at the 2024 Copa America. The side led by Alphonso Davies and coached by Jesse Marsch exceeded all expectations by making it to the semi-final of the tournament. However, the men in red have a lot to take pride in as their campaign came to a close.
To begin with, Marsch’s men were playing in their first-ever Copa America. After being drawn into a group of Argentina, Peru and Chile, The Reds pulled off surprising draws against both ten-man Chile and Peru. After qualifying from the group stages in second, Canada were up against Venezuela in the quarter final. Playing their first-ever knockout game in the tournament, Davies and co. did well to force penalties after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.
Canada have their goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to thank for making a crucial save against Wilker Angel in the penalty shootout. Their dream run came to an end as they faced Argentina in a rematch of Group A. 2-0 read the final score line yet again as Argentina repeated their success in the knockouts.
