With Super Bowl LX just around the corner, tension is building among New England Patriots fans, and for good reason. Just a day after Patriots quarterback Drake Maye assured everyone his shoulder was fine and that he’d be taking extra care, reports emerged that he missed practice.

Boston media’s Mike Reiss and Scott Callahan posted concerning news from the Patriots’ training facility on Friday night. Both highlighted that Maye was absent from practice.

Maye did show up for practice on Thursday. However, Callahan mentioned that the MVP front-runner stayed away from any kind of strenuous activity.

Drake Maye did not throw in the media portion of practice today. Maye is coming off a major shoulder injury in the AFC Championship game.

Callahan tweeted

Details about the injury are very vague. The Patriots’ front office has stayed quiet. When reporters sought further information, the Pro Bowler adeptly avoided revealing more than necessary. That being said, he assured everyone that he will take proper measures to protect his shoulder so that he can be 100% against the Seahawks on February 8.

Yeah, I feel good… I was able to do some of the jog through, so, [I am] feeling good. Looking forward to being ready to go. This is the game you dream of playing in, so looking forward to getting out there and getting a chance to play in the Super Bowl.

Mike Vrabel reacts to Drake Maye’s shoulder injury

Cam Newton might not give Drake Maye credit as a key piece in the Patriots’ chase for a seventh ring, but Mike Vrabel has been outspoken in his support for the young quarterback. Vrabel shielded Maye once again when reporters bombarded him with questions regarding his health.

Speaking with Tom Carroll of WEEI, Vrabel disclosed that Maye was at the facility on Friday and had a brief run-through because of illness aside from the bad shoulder.

[Maye’s practice] wasn’t full. So if it’s not full, it has to be down as limited. So I don’t know what percentage of the normal work, but it’s pretty clear if you’re not – don’t take the normal reps, or whatever, that you would normally take…so it wasn’t that much.

Vrabel told Carroll

Maye wasn’t the only Patriot to miss Friday’s practice. Veteran defenders Robert Spillane and Harold Landry were also absent.

A two-time Super Bowl winner is rooting for Drake Maye to break his record

Maye is 23 years old and won’t turn 24 until late August. If he plays and beats the Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium, he’ll become the youngest quarterback to win football’s biggest prize.

Right now, that title belongs to Ben Roethlisberger, who won the Super Bowl with the Steelers at the same age as Maye, though he turned a year older just a month later in March.

[Drake Maye’s] got a chance to break my youngest quarterback record that’s been running for a long, long time now, which I’m rooting for it. I’m rooting for him, but I’m not rooting for the Patriots, because then, they pass the Steelers on the list of most Super Bowls, so I’m kind of torn there.

Ben Roethlisberger said on First Things First (H/T: Steelers Depot)

Maye’s second year in the NFL ended with 354 completions for 4394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. New England finished as the second seed in the AFC. Later, they took down the Chargers, Texans, and the Broncos to advance to the Super Bowl in California.
