The New England Patriots are truly embarking on a new chapter this week. The team will be starting rookie quarterback Drake Maye in place of veteran Jacoby Brissett after his subpar performances through 5 weeks of the season.
To a rookie’s ears, hearing that he would be starting is nothing less than music. However, Drake Maye is built differently. The third-overall pick in the 2024 draft chose to display empathy and his leadership skills as the first thing he did was check in on Jacoby Brissett. Maye approached the veteran and asked him how he was doing after the news surfaced that he was being benched.
Jacoby Brissett was pleasantly surprised by this gesture as he was entrusted with the task of mentoring Drake Maye and is a captain of the Patriots. He understood that the rookie was coming from a good place but quickly put him at ease.
Powerful: #Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye asked Jacoby Brissett how he was doing after the news came out that he was being benched:

"Drake asked how I'm doing. I'm like, 'Man, if you're worried about me, you're worried about the wrong thing."

The quarterback made sure to put things into perspective for Maye. The NFL is ultimately a business and within a week, things can change abruptly.
Drake Maye will make his debut against the Houston Texans on Sunday
Right now, the only thing the rookie must be focused on is ensuring he is prepped and ready to perform against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The veteran further added that he wishes Maye nothing but the best, as are the fans in New England who have been waiting for this moment since Roger Goodell announced the Patriots were picking Drake Maye with their 3rd pick.
Maye’s concern should be to perform efficiently behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Pro Football Focus ranked the Patriots O-line as the worst in the league. As the rookie gears up for his start, it is time for Jacoby Brissett to take a step back yet again. The veteran won the starter’s role in training camp yet he was unable to make a mark come regular season. The Patriots are 1-4 and sit at the bottom of the league in terms of scoring.
It has not been an ideal environment for Drake Maye to be learning in and to be thrust into action out of the blue is probably nothing less than a nightmare. His performance this weekend should not be used to judge his skillset, out of all the rookie quarterbacks in the NFL, he finds himself placed in the most unfortunate situation. Nevertheless, it is a time of excitement for Patriots fans as they will get an opportunity to see their future franchise quarterback take the field for the first time.
