Drake MESSED UP Vince Carter’s jersey retirement as he continued his rap beef
Lou Williams would have preferred Drake take his beef with DeMar DeRozan at a different time than Vince Carter's jersey retirement.
Vince Carter's jersey retirement was marred by Drake's beef with DeMar DeRozan
NBA legend Vince Carter built his reputation during his initial few years with the Toronto Raptors. Even though he played for sixteen seasons with other teams, his heart was always with the Canadian franchise. It showed when the team retired his jersey amidst celebrities such as Drake.
The star wore the franchise on his sleeve so much that even the very announcement that they would retire his jersey brought him to tears. As he was instrumental in helping the Toronto Raptors become a success with his highlight reel plays.
Those six years were instrumental in helping establish a winning culture, as he led them to their first three playoff appearances. The franchise kept that culture firmly in their stride as they continued to draft elite players who helped the team return to playoff contention and then win their first ever NBA title.
In all that time, rapper Drake became the front-line celebrity fan, who brought in increased attention to the league. So much so, that he is a regular figure on the sidelines. But his recent feud with another Raptors great, DeMar DeRozan, became the central point of conversation.

This was what former Raptors player Lou Williams pointed out on the Run It Back show. He acknowledged that on the court, the moment was for the NBA dunking legend. But outside of it, Drake’s words about DeMar DeRozan took the spotlight away.
Vince Carter understands Drake’s situation
Lou Williams did not appreciate that Drake made it more about him, especially with how the rap beef with Kendrick Lamar has seen some of his friends flip over to the other side. But Vince Carter understands that as a native Canadian, seeing those loyalties shift was too much for him to take.
His words suggest the eight-time All-Star understands that his longtime friend had to make a statement, considering throughout the rap beef with Lamar, he was seen as the loser in the battle. So, to keep his territory intact, he suggested that he will rip off DeRozan’s jersey, after he defected to Lamar’s camp.
But in this case, the Sacramento Kings star was essentially doing the same thing what Drake did. However, he did not bring it into basketball. That is the point Lou Williams was trying to make as the rapper could have made his opinions clear at another time.
