One of the consistent wordplay themes in Drake’s rap career has been his use of basketball stars in his lyrics. The Toronto-based artist’s first smash hit Forever featured LeBron James on the music video. He’s since name-dropped Lou Williams, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Devin Booker and dozens of other star hoopers. It seems that Cade Cunningham is the latest to join this list of players who got exposure from Drake.

The 38-year-old popstar’s fans leaked a song that isn’t associated with any of Drake’s known projects till date. Drizzy Drake references being in the Detroit Pistons locker room and getting with a woman there. He also explicitly states using Cade Cunningham’s crocs, left by the MIP favorite in his locker room, while indulging in intercourse.

Everything is earned in this life baby nothing given
Heard you cut your bestie off I know that was a tough decision
Sleeping in the Pistons locker room I’m on another mission
Cade Cunningham left his crocs yeah I f**ked her in em

Drake’s lyrics from the leaked song read like this

The leaked track, called Shopping Spree by the musician’s fanbase, has also been acknowledged by the pop superstar. Drake uploaded an Instagram story that seems to legitimize the use of these lyrics and this track.

NBA fans roast Drake for the Cade Cunningham reference

Drake has never truly had a universal following among core male hip-hop fans due to his lyrical content. The Canadian rapper attained new heights in his career by using his vulnerable lyrics and by talking about his feelings for women in ways that hadn’t been popular among hip-hop fans before him. His major fanbase was formed by black and white women even during the height of his popularity from between 2015 to 2018.

Since his loss to Kendrick Lamar in a landmark rap battle back-and-forth that consisted of nine songs, the hip-hop superstar has ceded further ground to the Compton-based rapper while simultaneously lowering his own credibility by refusing to take his defeats on the cheek.

His latest leak appears to antagonize further male hip-hop fans, who find various problematic things in his constant urge to talk about getting with women and using ‘zesty’ language to do so. A fan called him a ‘weird-a** human’, saying, “This whole thing of fuckin some girl while wearing another ni**as Crocs? Ok, cool. Shit happens. Did we need to be made privy to that top secret G14 Classified info? Ion think so yo. This ni**a is weird and wonders why he doesn’t get the respect he wants so badly from this side.”

It is unlikely that Drake pays any heed to this kind of commentary about his subject matter. He has had the Midas touch for nearly 15 years while being a rap superstar, even though he isn’t an out-and-out rapper. His aim has always been to be more accessible to people through his choice of beats and sound. Drake released an RnB album with label mate Partynxtdoor and hopes to land his next Billboard #1 hit through his song Nokia.
