Wife-beating allegations followed Draymond Green after Rudy Gobert incident

It has been more than one and a half years since Draymond Green choked Rudy Gobert. That incident sent shockwaves around the basketball world and the Golden State Warriors superstar was labelled a thug and his dirty player monicker reached new heights.

The NBA suspended him for five games along with a fine. That suspension was issued to help him understand that he needed to calm it down. Many memes floated the internet, but most importantly, he had lost face.

A month later, he struck Phoenix Suns star Jusuf Nurkic. The NBA now suspended him indefinitely and forced him to enter a league monitored counseling program. Fans and media constantly attacked him for failing to keep his cool. Many felt he had hit rock bottom, however, according to Green, it was something else.

By the way, ‘He’s beating his wife at home. He’s beating his kids because look what he does on a basketball court.’ That’s crazy … to have to live through that. That was kind of rock bottom for me. Like my wife opening her Instagram and [seeing] ‘I’m so sorry’ [comments]. ‘I know you’re getting beaten at home.’ Beaten?… It’s not even in my demeanor.

The Chicago native said this on the latest episode of NBC Sports Bay Area’s “Dubs Talk” podcast. He believes the narrative post the Gobert incident was the ‘rock bottom’ of his life. It was too much for him to digest the narratives fans and media were painting.

Draymond Green was bothered by narratives after 2023 incidents

The wife-beating allegations blew the lid off Draymond Green‘s life. The Rudy Gobert as well as Jusuf Nurkic incidents led many to consider the Golden State Warriors star as a horrible human being. But he believed it was not at all part of his character.

I take pride in who I am as a human being. I take pride in being a stand-up guy. If I see you and walk past you, I’m going to say, ‘Hi.’ I take pride in just being a great person. For my character to be under attack, that bothered me to my core because the things that were being said isn’t an accurate depiction of me and who I am.

The 35-year-old has a reputation for playing a tough physical style of basketball. Time to time he has resorted to dirty plays. He tries to get away with most of them. But some of them do end up coming to the attention of officials.

Along with his constant arguments with officials, officials do award the forward/center quite a few technical fouls. Sometimes he gets two in a game, which also explains why he has that many ejections and suspensions. But he believes that is all on the court, and not a reflection of how he is as a character.

Draymond Green leads odds for Defensive Player of the Year

This season, Draymond Green has not had many technical fouls or ejections. In fact, he has leveled up his game. Statistics might not show the exact picture, but his defense against top players has firmly made him a favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Bovada Sportsbook has the four-time champion a -150 favorite to win it. His next best competitor is Cleveland Cavaliers star Evan Mobley at 115. League steals per game leader Dyson Daniels is next with +1100 odds.

He might not have had a chance had Victor Wembanyama not ended his season early. But now that the coast is clear, Green is doing all that he can to win this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award. If the Golden State Warriors can cap off a deep playoff run, both those accomplishments should net him some retribution.
