Over the last couple of days, Kevin Durant has stoked some debate after he claimed that his joining Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson on the 2017 Golden State Warriors was similar to LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Slim Reaper has had to face criticism for that throughout this past decade, with many even suggesting that joining the winningest regular-season team has blighted his legacy.

His latest attempt at changing that discourse was when he claimed that James joining the 76ers was similar to his joining the Warriors. Naturally, such a claim would draw backlash.

Analysts started to point out that the two teams were a lot different in capability, and that the Warriors became favorites to win it all back then. In contrast, the 76ers are nowhere close to being the favorites, as they have a lot of problems they need to overcome.

Joel, MVP recently. Jaylen brown, recent finals MVP. Tyrese Maxey, all-star the last 3 years. We all know what Bron does. Klay Thompson, never a MVP candidate in nothing, 22ppg. Draymond, 14ppg, 7 rebounds, 6 assist. Steph a MVP just like Joel was. I don’t get how the Warriors team is better on paper.

The Warriors star was basically trolling his former teammate. After all, Kevin Durant has been alleged to have been using a burner account. Green thought this was him pointing out those numbers to continue pushing the narrative that he was on an inferior team compared to LeBron James’ 76ers.

Draymond Green does not agree with Kevin Durant’s rationale behind LeBron James-76ers comparisons

That effort by Kevin Durant was not the only explanation he had about how LeBron James’ 76ers are better than his 2017 Golden State Warriors. He also pointed out in another deleted Threads post that the Sixers have more 25+ point scorers than the three 20+ point scorers that were on his team.

You have to understand the way KD view basketball. The way KD view basketball is very Uncle Drew-ish. This game will and always will be about buckets… So he’s going to mention the 25-point scorers. He also said the Sixers are better on paper than the Warriors were in 2016-17… I don’t know that I can agree with that, I don’t really think it works.

Draymond Green said on his show

This was the former Defensive Player of the Year making it clear how Durant views the game. Based on that rationale, he may be right. Green believes fans are getting it twisted on how the comparison was made, and that is why they are going after him.

On the other hand, Green did not agree that the current Philadelphia 76ers team is better than the 2017 Warriors squad. It seems he is of the notion that no matter what Durant says, there is no taking away the fact that the 2017 team was a league apart. The current Sixers team is nowhere close to that status.

Kevin Durant cannot hope to change the narrative until LeBron James’ 76ers win the 2027 championship

Draymond Green reiterated that Kevin Durant’s opinion must be respected even though he himself does not agree with it. It seems nothing will stop the 16-time All-Star from facing the flak while attempting to change the narratives that surround his legacy.

The only way his current opinion can hold water is if LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers go on to win the 2027 NBA championship. If that happens, the DC native can use the situation to prove how his championships were not due to joining the best team in the league.

The only problem for Durant is twofold. On one hand, history has proven that James-led teams win the championship in the second year after he signs with them. If that happens, this narrative-changing effort might not work.

On the other hand, some question whether the 76ers will even manage to stage a deep playoff run. If either of these comes true, the 37-year-old can forget about changing the opinion fans and analysts have about him.
