There were murmurs that Drake Maye’s position as the New England Patriots quarterback was in danger after Joe Milton’s swashbuckling performance on the season’s final day. A section of the fans suddenly wanted to see the sixth-rounder start in 2025 instead of Maye.

Maye’s rookie season is far from anything similar to Jayden Daniels or CJ Stroud’s. There were flashes in pockets that gave the Patriots fans something to look forward to in the future.

One quality that surprised many was Maye’s use of his feet. He made a name for himself as a brilliant pocket passer with a cannon of an arm at North Carolina. The part fans forgot is that he can also run the ball if the coaches ask him to.

Former Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe wants the 22-year-old to use the running part of his game more effectively.

It’s such a great weapon, and quite honestly, I am a little jealous of. It wasn’t a big part of my game obviously. But it can really break the back of a defense when you have a defensive play on third down… Where you cover everybody and all of a sudden the quarterback pulls a run to get a first down.

Maye rushed 54 times in thirteen starts for 421 yards and scored a couple of touchdowns in his first year in the NFL. Bledsoe advised Maye to take a page from NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes’ book.

Mahomes is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play football and is pushing Tom Brady for the title of the GOAT. The best way to describe his style is to create something out of nothing. Fans have repeatedly seen the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback pull off a remarkable clutch play in garbage time. Bledsoe wants Maye to be like Mahomes.

You watch Pat Mahomes… [It] seems like every game, you know, at the end of a game, you know, Pat would make one big play, running the ball, obviously he’s magic throwing the ball, but it just always seemed like in crunch time, he’d pull it down and run for that first down that was just a backbreaker.

Mahomes had a big jump in his second year at Kansas City, winning 12 games. Perhaps Maye can emulate him and bring back the glory days to Boston.

He will have some room because the Patriots traded Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks. There were rumors that Milton demanded to be the starter. Several in the Patriots’ brass were against it, and he ended up being Dak Prescott’s backup.

Reporters asked Maye about his opinion on Milton’s departure after just one game.

I texted Joe. Me and Joe came in together. We learned the offense together. We were competing every day to out-throw each other at practice. So it was cool for him to get a chance to go and be a back-up… [I am] pulling for Joe. Probably play him again, or I’ll see him down the road.

The Patriots signed journeyman quarterback Josh Dobbs as Maye’s number two. He penned a two-year, $8 million contract. Dobbs was on the San Francisco 49ers roster last season, backing up Brock Purdy.
