This year, there will be two different matchups going on during the NFL regular season. While the teams battle it out on the field, there is another battle brewing in the broadcasting booth. With former NFL players being pursued by broadcasting networks, a popularity contest is forming to see who can bring the big names to broadcast for them.

With FOX Sports signing Tom Brady for a decade, Drew Brees seems to be the next person intending to get back into broadcasting with NBC. The former New Orleans Saints QB has the experience of reporting and broadcasting with the network for a year. Now, he is hoping to get another shot with a primary focus on broadcasting games.

He made a case for himself and why he believes he would be the perfect fit for broadcasting. He asserted that he could bring value to broadcasting live NFL games.

The thing that I wanted to do most that I felt like I could bring the most value at was broadcasting NFL games. And it was the right thing I had the least opportunity to do, right? I was able to do a little bit of college at Notre Dame. Just two NFL games broadcasting that were eight weeks apart and then the studio stuff, right? But, man I love the game and I would love to broadcast NFL games, you know, at some point. I think I could be the best at it.
Drew Brees said.

His last contract with NBC entrusted him with broadcasting and being a panelist in the studio. He was not able to get as much time as he would have liked at the broadcast booth which is why he seeks a second chance now.

Drew Brees wants to be part of the game-day crew responsible for broadcasting games

He expressed his interest in joining the Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, or Thursday Night Football programs. However, the problem is all of these prime-time shows feature NBC’s best and most experienced hosts. At the moment, all of the spots are occupied but there is a possibility that Brees could be made a guest on the show from time to time.

Networks shy away from allotting prime-time games to relatively inexperienced hosts. Although Brees knows the game better than anyone on the panel, broadcasting is not just about one’s knowledge of the game. They need to be quick and must be able to present what they are seeing in an entertaining yet simplistic manner for fans watching. At the moment, NBC has Troy Aikman, Cris Collinsworth, and Kirk Herbstreit handling the prime time slots.

It will most certainly be hard for him to immediately be made a part of the prime-time games. In the best case, the network may agree to feature him as a guest or give him some designated time to evaluate how he fares. Based on that, they may decide the next course of action. Drew Brees remains hopeful of securing the role, however, if he is not able to, then he will continue coaching.
