Drew Brees is not a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles’ run-first approach. The retired NFL quarterback bluntly called the reigning world champion’s offense ‘boring,’ despite a 3-0 start to the 2025 season.
At the center of all the focus are the Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts, offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, and their conservative style of play. Through the first three games, the Eagles ran the ball 99 times as compared to 77 pass attempts.
Hurts threw for 152 yards in week one, decreased to 101 the following week, and did not throw a single passing touchdown. It was a different story on the ground, with a league-leading three rushing touchdowns as a quarterback.
Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Drew Brees discussed the Eagles’ offense and unexpectedly called their offense “boring”.
I respect Philly. They are winning games… I can’t stand to watch that offense. It’s the most boring offense.

The Eagles’ offense may be boring, but they are winning games
The effects of running the ball stared in the face. Hurts targeted star receiver AJ Brown only 9 times in the first two games, resulting in 6 catches for 35 yards.

It was the same story last year. While Saquon Barkley thrived in the system, roping in 2000+ scrimmage yards and 45+ touchdowns, Brown managed 1079 yards from 67 receptions, despite crossing 1450 yards in each of his first two seasons in Philly. Brown requested more targets from Hurts.
I truly believe we got so many good players on this team, and at times you can feel like we’re being conservative, and I don’t think it should be like that. I think it should be to let your killers do their thing and play fast and play aggressive. I’m not saying that we haven’t been, but for me, personally, that’s what I would like.

In week three, the Eagles came back from behind to win 26-33 against the Los Angeles Rams. Brown caught 6 passes for 109 yards and scored one touchdown.
Critics often overlook the fact that Hurts can throw the ball when required. It’s just that Patulo’s offensive scheme relies more on the running game. However, former Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday pointed out that the Eagles are much more than just a running team. Nick Sirianni has coached his players to win duels in the trenches.
Sydney slants and checks down Charlie, and all of a sudden, we just act. We’re airing it out. I think they completed like 27 passes in two yards or less. That’s the same as running the ball, Drew [Brees].

Saturday highlighted that the Eagles’ passing game is averaging 159.7 yards in 2025, while the rushing game averages 122 yards on 99 overall carries (including tush push).
The Tush Push may be a polarizing move, but it has helped the Eagles score ample points when used. Boring is subjective in the Eagles’ case. They are winning games, and that’s all that matters for the team and the fans.
The Eagles possess this special ability of flipping the switch when required. They did exactly that in Super Bowl 59 and against the Rams in week three. Is it sustainable? Maybe not, but it’s undeniably effective.
