The New York Giants have been quite in the headlines concerning their quarterbacks. With starter Daniel Jones struggling at the position ever since he suffered the ACL injury in week 9, fans seemed to be favoring the newly signed Drew Lock for the starting position.

However, the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback is well aware of how things are panning out internally, that’s why he made his stance clear amidst the speculation about a potential quarterback competition within the franchise. While talking to reporters after the Giants’ OTAs, Lock clarified that he has been signed as backup to Jones, not to replace him

Lock opened up on the same on Thursday, when asked about his backup position being the most popular position at the moment, via NJ.com.

I wouldn’t say that. I would say I appreciate the people that respect my game and know what I can do, but you’re the backup, and you’re here to help Daniel.

Lock further shared that he knows how to be there when the team needs him as a backup but wishes the situation doesn’t come to that as he wants the team to perform well. He also clarified that he isn’t after Jones’ job and only wishes for him to perform well.

However, the Giants’ new backup also stated that he knows he can win games for the team if he was made the starter. He will be ready to fill in, whenever the Giants would need him in the upcoming season.

Daniel Jones eyes week 1 return for Giants

While Lock is preparing to fill in as a starter, Jones has been participating in 7-on-7 drills in the Giants’ OTAs. Coming off the torn ACL injury, Jones is preparing himself to be ready in week 1 of the 2024 regular season, against the Minnesota Vikings.

I don’t have any doubt about it,” said Jones on Thursday, when asked whether he will be ready for the Week 1 faceoff.

However, the Giants are still taking the practice session at a slow pace and not keeping Jones in full team drills. Head coach Brian Daboll is taking the approach of one step at a time with the starting quarterback, stating they will put him in more drills when he is ready for it.
