Drew McIntyre went up against Sami Zayn yesterday at the Royal Rumble with the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line. ‘The Underdog from the Underground’ had become the number one contender to it by virtue of winning the Fatal-4-Way at Saturday Night’s Main Event against Randy Orton, Damian Priest, and Trick Williams.

Aside from the sky-high stakes, it was the 12th one-on-one meeting between Zayn and McIntyre in WWE. Unfortunately for Zayn and the majority of the fans in attendance in Riyadh, the result was no different than the previous 11 times he has stood across from ‘The Scottish Psychopath’.

Even though the former ‘Honorary Uce’ was able to put his left foot on the bottom rope after being hit with a Claymore kick, Sami Zayn was done for the second time around. ‘The Chosen One’ brutally powerbombed his opponent through the reinforced Arabic announce table at ringside.

The sheer force of Zayn’s backside crashing into the desk from atop McIntyre’s shoulders demolished the desk completely.

A number of officials went over to check on a lifeless Zayn and were visibly worried about his physical condition. It didn’t matter to McIntyre, who rolled the Canuck back into the ring and clobbered him with a couple more Claymore kicks to get the pinfall.

And just like that, the big man from Ayr remained the Undisputed WWE Champion. On the other hand, Zayn couldn’t make the opportunity count that he had been longing for.

The 41-year-old rang in the new year vowing to become a world champion after having talked a big game about it over the past year and more. The erstwhile El Generico had a home-like advantage in Riyadh. But even that couldn’t rally him over the finish line. Zayn also didn’t enter the Royal Rumble match to try to punch his ticket to WrestleMania, contrary to the expectation of some individuals.

Why did Drew McIntyre sneak-attack Cody Rhodes in the Royal Rumble match?

Drew McIntyre‘s night at the Royal Rumble wasn’t over with just putting Sami Zayn away. In fact, he appeared in the later stages of the men’s Royal Rumble match to attack Cody Rhodes and get him eliminated. The former 3MB member Claymore kicked Rhodes while the latter was holding onto the ropes for dear life. The kick was all McIntyre needed to rob the ‘QB1’ of a third Royal Rumble match win on the trot.

But why did the Scotsman do so? Speaking on the Royal Rumble post-show, the 40-year-old explained that he would be best friends with those who haven’t wronged him. But if it’s the other way around, McIntyre affirmed he wouldn’t hesitate to be their worst enemy, and the latter part applies to Rhodes.

It certainly appears like the ‘Scottish Warrior’ still has a deep-rooted malignity toward ‘The American Nightmare’ after starting a rivalry with him this past August. McIntyre brought up how many fans think that Rhodes is a different breed altogether while chasing the WWE title instead of when he has it.

The hulking specimen from Ayr asserted that he’s at his best while holding the gold. McIntyre said that he’d make Rhodes’ life a living hell before stating that he would’ve been fine with any wrestler winning the Royal Rumble yesterday but him.

These men have also developed a common foe in Jacob Fatu since his return during the Three Stages of Hell match on SmackDown three weeks ago. ‘The Samoan Werewolf’ is in the hunt for both Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes, and this feud has the legs to stretch until WrestleMania 42.
